The Igniters function

I have been reading up on toyota ignition systems a bit but I havent been able to find a source that explains the function of an igniter.
Is it an amplifier for an ECU signal, or does it function as more of a sensor?
Basically, what does the bloody thing do hehe, and what would be the symptoms if one isnt functioning correctly??

basically it is an amplifier man, and depending on the type of igniter it might also control the dwell time of the coil. if it wasnt working you would either have weak spark or no spark at all.

igniter.
takes the input (such as hall effect or VR) and either conditions signal to fire the transistor that grounds the coil.
or conditions signal to send to ECU which sends back and that signal then fires the transistor that grounds the coil.
igniters 'usually' (perhaps?) control the dwell. timing is either controlled by the dizzy, or the ECU.

Thanks for the info guys...sounds like its one of those modules that either works or it just doesnt in which case, the car would not run (or run sick as a dog) mine runs fine after starting so im going to look towards a fuel related problem.
Yeah, toyota only supply a elec. diagram of the unit, no way for even toyota techies to test it, manual just says 'no IGF or IGT signal - Replace igniter' hehe
cheers!
