Gas in the US

Taken from an American forum;
Quote: | I went to a Shell station the other day, and they had FIVE grades of gas (87, 88, 89, 91, 93). Honestly, does anyone need that many options?
|
And I thought we had it bad getting only 97 octane. The poor bastards, 93 is 'premium'

yeah but at thier pirce of fuel you can afford to buy the elf stuff by the 44 gallon drum, leave it at home and chuck ten litres in with every tank and still pay less than us for fuel and probably have 100 octane fuel in your tank

Their fuel is in a different rating to ours. You'll find their 93 is roughly equivalent to our 98RON.

Ahh ok, now I feel stupid
Still, why the need for 5 different grades? Should I go the 87 or the 88, or maybe the 89?

the number of grades is because of the number of different types of vehicles they have, and because typically americans are anal.
eg - jap cars take 91 and high-po jap imports take 93.. but local trucks etc take 87-89.
I also compared their prices to ours when in colorado. It worked out about 10c per litre less, and that was with a 70-75c exchange rate. dont be fooled so easily
