Diff whine Mon, 11 October 2004 04:45 Go to next message
I just got a locked T-series center as an interim while I save up for a proper LSD, and it's rather loud - like a whirring loud... It's okay up to about 30k's, at 60 I can't hear my engine or exhaust anymore, and at 100 I can't hear myself even if I shout...

I'm guessing this means the diff is rather stuffed. It doesn't really sound like crunchy bearings, it's more like a 747 sort of whine... Oh yeah, and only on acceleration. On coast it's relatively quiet... I've been told that locked diffs whine, but surely they aren't meant to make this much noise?

What will happen if I keep driving on it? Will it just wear out really quickly? Or will it self destruct and blow everything to bits?

where did you get it from? 2nd hand or shop?

Did you change the crown from the previous center onto it or use a new one?

It's 2nd hand.

And no, nothing's been replaced on it. Just pulled from the old housing, welded up and put into the new housing...

The Bearings might be stuffed? Mine is stuffed with similar sounds...

I've been told that bearings tend to make a more crunchy sound though, not a whining sound? And besides, if it was bearings wouldn't it make noises all the time, whether on acceleration or deceleration?

I don't know much about diffs...

Most likely pinion pre-load. A diff shop will be able to tell you straight away.

It will probably be that the pinion isnt meshing with the crown wheel properly.

Very common, live with it or replace it.

Maybe try and put some additives into the oil to reduce the sound. (like banana skins or graphite powder)

If I choose the "live with it" option (due to lack of funds, and the fact that it probably won't be in the car for more than a few months - and that's only with some weekend driving), is it likely to blow up or do anything severe like that?

I suppose my main concern is driving out to Willowbank this weekend and have it detonate on me halfway there, or halfway back...

I can live with the noise (hoorah for ear plugs), and I can live with accelerated wear since it won't be in the car for long, but if it blows up and sends the car spearing off into the scenery or something tragic like that, then no, I can't live with that...

I can't see meshing problems causing a diff lockup.

But then again, I'm no diff expert.

If it was my car, and I had a planned swap in a few months, I'd leave it, and get a louder stereo in the meantime

Incorrect pinion pre-load definitely will result in accelerated wear. Exactly how long it will last is anyone's guess though.

Well, I've already signed up for an LSD, it just depends on when one comes up for sale. I'm hopeful a few months is as long as it takes...

No stereo in car (club car), and besides I can't even hear myself shouting over the whine of the diff... It's even louder than my angle grinder, and I get many many stares from people as they drive past me on the freeway...

That's fair enough, I just hope it lasts long enough...

Oh well I guess I might leave it in the car for now, just going to change the diff oil before the weekend and try to fix the slight bearing end float that I've got and hopefully the car will survive the weekend... Unless there's a lot of metal bits in the oil, then I'll have to look to borrow or buy another center for the weekend...

when you get your new lsd you will have to get it done properly. dont be dodgy because you can only put up with that sound for so long. you will need new pinion gear and bearings so it would pretty much be a whole diff rebuild. get tighter springs if it is clutch type, 280 i think is the go?

Well I'm on the waiting list for a 2nd hand TRD one, complete with gears... I believe the TRD one is a clutch type? Probably won't be able to afford to rebuild it or anything for now as I'm already really stretching the budget to get it, will just run it for a bit until I have a bit more money later down the track... And yes, would like it to be quiet...

Also with the TRD unit I've heard I need to get the axles shortened about 5mm each, can anyone confirm? I seem to be getting conflicting thoughts, some people have told me I don't need to get them shortened...

Or does anyone know of any for sale? None of the importers I know seem to have any for sale, best price I can get so far is $770 for the whole center unit (including gears and carrier) but yeah, none in stock.

Did you weld the diff while it was all still assembled? They don't always like this!

Umm, I'm not sure, it wasn't welded by me. I have been assured, however, that it was kept cool while it was being welded (to prevent it from warping etc)

crownwheel/ring & pinion contact patch.
it does make more noise with light/cruising throttle then full throttle & heavy load, doesn't it?
the pinion bearing pre-load can be perfect, but it is its position to mesh with the ring gear that is much more important and will make it whine when mis-aligned.
no oil or additive will change it unless it has been empty, and that won't save its life by much.

allencr: it makes a "rougher" noise under light/cruising throttle, but I don't know if it is louder than full throttle & heavy load. It's all pretty loud to me Razz
