what new clutch for my aw11 Mon, 11 October 2004 09:21 Go to next message
my clutch is almost gone, when driving normal its fine, give it one hit and it will slip until i rest it for a day

now i need to know which clutch to get, brand and part no + contact would be good. aw11 4agze, pretty sure its lsd E51 coz it says it on the manufacturer plate. car vibrates on very slow turns, is that what lsd are like?

i want a good clutch might be adding bit more horses in future, what do people recommend. im unsure what clutch i have atm but 20 000kms ago it was really grabby. everyone stalled my car on first drive. i used to try out launches when i first got it and even take off at 5-6000rpm it wont slip and just spin the wheels. just dont know y it died so quick

also what is a lightened flywheel and what do it do? is it worth it? or should i just get whatever i have in my car and machine it

lastly any tips on changing clutch backyard? few people told me mr2s take long time to change 6-8hrs but this is the later mr2s. i had a quick peep under my car didnt seems like it had any big crossmember across it, gearbox seems pretty exposed with few mounts, maybe only exhaust in the way. if i need to drop the engine i mite aswell do the timing belt, waterpump and 164mm nevo

thanx

okay... here goes (and remember i'm NOT an expert here):

theory behind lightened flywheel (and somebody who ACTUALLY knows feel more than free to correct me) is that there is less inertial mass for the engine to spin helping it to rev more freely and have less power wasted through the drive-train (ie more power to the wheels)... on the downside the car becomes more jerky if going on and off throttle for the same reason (especially at very low revs - eg idling through a carpark). also engine braking decreases for a similar reason. i can personally say that having one does feel a little different - although thinking about it now, it's prolly money that i would've been better off spending elsewhere first - 'cept my clutch said "seeya" and i figured i might as well do it all at the same time... (btw costwise your looking at around $900+ for a lightened flywheel vs around $30 for machining the current one you have and to be quite honest in a SC mr2 i don't know if it would be worth the money, but if anyone out there has done it feel free to tell me i'm a dick )

as for the clutch i can't give you a part number as mine is NA version and the guys at adelaide clutch didn't seem to recommend it for a supercharged version, but if you go for something suitable in the "xtreme" series http://www.xclutch.com.au/ you should find something more than adequate... i'm happy with mine and that's where i got mine. prolly recommend something of the ceramic kind if you want something a little more grabby.

now down to fitting - would've been nice to do it myself, but the mechanic who rebuilt my motor (after it spun a big end bearing a week after i got it - yay fun that was. meanwhile here i am thinking "20 valve" - and don't worry - one day!!! lol) did it for $150 and that is a VERY decent price if you wanna get quoted elsewhere ($360 upwards).
you don't need to remove the entire motor just the front and back mounts and the passenger side one then slide the gearbox out... you will need a tool (?little help here?) to centre the clutch as otherwise the gearbox shaft (sorry my brain is a little frozen from my 15 hour day and cannot think of correct terms) will be a total pain in the butt to slide back in!

remember that this is just my 2 cents - hopefully other people will post to give you more help.

best of luck - we need more good aw11s out and about - i can't believe how many trashed ones i see!!! Twisted Evil

oh... sorry - as for time... taking into account you've never done it before i'd figure about that much time (maybe more if you're doing it with nobody to help you)

i recently put in a daikin heavy duty clutch. i was previously running a brass button, this baby bites HARD, i think it is very nice. Cost around 550 for the clutch i think.

weve got the excedy four puck ceramic in the mr grabs like a bitch. also went much stronger pressure plate whilst we were at it.

can be a little tiresome to drive around town but when you want to give it some it just grabs and grabs.

daikin/exedy heavy duty is the go... without going for something heaps dearer.
backyard is quite doable but be wary that bleeding the cluth system is a 2 person job!

thanx for the reply

it seems exedy/daikain HD is the way to go? is that $550 for clutch pad only or complete kit with suitable pressure plate, bearing etc... dont feel like spending more than $500. do i just tell them its for a aw11 4agze with E51 gearbox? whats 4 puck ceramic means? is that stronger then HD?

i'll just reuse and machine the old flywheel, didnt know it cost so much and doesnt seem worth it at all

can spanktown and toof gimme a part number? makes it easier when i talk to the shop

ceramic is the compound, either go ceramic or metal. the metal will grip a shade quicker and sharper but will be harder to drive around town. the ceramic will be eaiser to drive around twon. ceramic will generally also cost a shade more.

4 puck is the design of the clutch. it will be round with 4 pieces sitting out from he centre ring. these are the contact points.
