All you car experts, help a noob out!

Hey guys, I've been looking around for my first car and had my heart set on a 1991 MR2. I've run into a little speed bump though, it's a 2-seater and I'm sure that in the future it'll become a big problem, so just wondering if you could help us out.
Whats a good car to get for under 13K that's efficient and cost-effective?
Also a car where insurance would be reasonable.

first car for 13k
shit you're doing alright!
if you are looking for something efficient and cost-effective buy an echo or a corolla. 13k will get you a fair bit in that category.
im guessing however, by your mention of an mr2 that you want some performance to go with that efficiency.
it may be getting difficult thought to find a car thats efficient, sporty, and cheap to insure.
sort your priorities in order and it might be easier

yeah! i wish i had one
if you get some turbo POWAH! car you'll probably write it off.
no offence meant to you, but seriously, fresh on the Ps with an overly powerful car has never been a good combo. plus insurance for any turbo will be at least 3 grand without an insurance history, if they insure you at all.
with 13k, you can get a nice sprinter, an import if you want a fucking mint one, and then have some insurance money and some 'fix it up' money.
but you are gonna get a million suggestions for a first car, especially because you have 13 grand. i would suggest doing a lot of research, and making your own decision. take into account he advice you get here, as there are alot of people who know what they're talking about (im not one of them ), but dont let it make your decision for you.

AE86...
Apparently (I am still learning); they are one of the best things to teach you how a car responds when pushing it.
It is often classed as a car "that handles like a racecar on the roads" [I think this is the best factor in your position]
My ae86 is actually my second car, and with that amount of money, you can do alot of mods already or buy one with mods.
But I believe best..... buy a nice example of one, learn to push it to the limit and controll it, then power it up a little, and do the same, gradual process, but will make you a safer and better drive,r and if you value getting onto a race circuit etc eventually.... it will have paid off greatly.....
And if you the type of person who values "face". Thanks to Initial D etc (YAY - funni that it is the opposite hapenins in the actual thing), they are really looked down upon and respected. They are already deemed a classic...

Save the money for insurance future mods or even custome sprayjob if you will.... and cars are ongoing cost anyways..
Just cause u have it doesnt have it doesnt mean you have to spend it straight out.

take it from someone who learnt the hard way i went and got a 10grand car for my first car and no offence but there is a huge chance of losing it, buy something that doesn't cost you too much say 3-5grand put the rest aside maybe do a few mods to your car of choice.
also get something oldish that there are plenty of insurance will be big money on anything to flash hot.
i don't know how much insurance is on say an ae86 or a lt or xt celica.

so goose what you are saying is spend 3-4 K on a car and then piss away another ten on modifications which is money you totally wont get back so then in six months when you are sick of the car you have a car worth maybe $6K tops...i dont like that equation...
If you want to mod a car dude then get something worthwhile to modify, i.e. Garth has a very very nice AE86 that he paid around 13K for and would be worth modding more for maybe some more power, but dont just listen to the 86 lovers out there, definitely go for a toyota but look at other options, what about a V8 soarer an NA JZA80?
just make sure you dont rush into it thats all

no what i'm saying is don't piss the money away save it for the next car, but do a few minor mods here and there to get the car to a spot which you like eg. throw stock tape deck get a cd player replace paper cone dieing speakers etc.

Haters...no. Just preparing the guy for the inevitable disappointment the first time he drive an AE86. Slow and bad handling. Just cos a car has the potential to handle well and go hard doesn't mean it does.

Dude, he has $13k to spend.... I'm sure that could buy an AE86 that is not slow with bad handling.
And I was only joking about the hating bit.... It's just funny to me whenever someone says something positive about AE86's, there are a certain few who always chime in and shoot them down in flames!
I wish I was grumpy enough to bag the shit out of all the cars I think are crap that people own on these forums.....

Think LOOOOONG and hard about the chances of you totalling your car while you learn the ropes. I think if you start out with a $3k sh!tter, you'll better appreciate your subsequent cars as well.
Word to the wise though: if you do get something in that lower $$ bracket, buy simple and cheap to fix. have phun in any case!

firstly i would forget the mr2, too expensive and good luck with insurance. Im assuming you are on your red Ps, and haven't been driving long, think about what you need in a car most before buying anything.

Not a toyota but what about cars like Galnt VR4 Lancer GSR and LIberty RS Turbo all these cars are around that price range and whe driven noramlly are fairly efficient and when driven hard will wipe the arse of many a current performance car especially through the twisties. They may be a bit to insure though but no less than an Mr2. Or you could just buy a mid 90's corolla spec it up a bit and will be cheap oin fuel and insurance.
