At the other end of the scale, my speedo has been making a ticking nose for over 7 years, and it still runs fine.
*shrug*
Can't say that I've ever been motovated to fix it as yet...

Thanks for the reply fellas.
I'm still not sure whether it will be worth it to take apart the dash to get to the back of the speedo, or if there will be anything I can do to it when I get in there.

My SA63 Speedo makes a ticking noise ever since we got the car. Now it has done 400,000Kms and the speedo is working good, just that the needle bounces / vibrates around 60kph.
Oh well. As long as it works and i don't get speeding tickets, everything is a OK...
That is my 2 cents

Most old cars with a cable speedo usually have something crook about them in one way or another. Pull the dash cluster out, see if the noise goes away, if so the either:
Rip it apart and see what you can do
Take it to a speedo place and let them do it
Get another one

Howdy,
My car was making a throbbing/ticking noise and the needle was wavering around 50km/h. This was annoying but in my too hard basket. When the needle started to waver between 100 and 140 on the highway with cruise set at 100, i got angry with it. i took out my cluster and carefully sprayed the speedo gears and cogs with silicone spray (a dry lube, not glue) and also managed to get alot of it nown the neck of my speedo cable. take care not to spray the speedo clutch (the discy bit in the back of the speedo).
My speedo is silent and works as new and has done so for 10000kms.
It is worth doing it sits so still now :>

Hey that is a great idea! Never thought of that...
But i can't do that (Spray inside the cluster, due to the fact that i assume that the speedo has been put back by someone previously to me) because all the screws around the cluster is stuffed and can't use a phillips head screw driver to undo.
I might have a crack at spraying it down the cable though...
Cheers.

The replies have been really helpful, thanks guys.
One more question....
ok how do you remove the cable from the back of the cluster, I can get my hand in behind and can feel the retaining clip, but I'm not sure how you release it, can anyone let me know?

Its been a while since i have been behind the cluster but, from memory to remove the clip lift the clip which is attached into the groove to the cluster. Don't lift too much else you might break the clip.
I know its a tight fit behind the cluster, i used to always cut my hands! I got sick of cutting my hands from removing the cluster all the time that i taped up all the sharp edges.
I could be wrong... Can anyone elaborate on it?
Cheers.

Thanks for the help ZZT231
I got the clip off from the cluster, and removed the other end from the gearbox, and then I took it for a drive, to make sure it was the cable that was noisy.....
It was still making the same noise!
I was so sure it was the speedo cable...
So, now I'm trying to work out what the noise could be now, it varies with road speed so it's gotta be something like the CV's or the diff, or something else in the gearbox. If it's any of these it's gonna be expensive to fix.

Damn. Sorry I couldn't help you... Could it be a flat spot on the tires or a hub bearing? Anyway I have run out of ideas...
Cheers
