If you had a stock Celica ST162 what would be your list of mods?
I'd be interested to see what the First mods would be.

first thing i'd do is get good looking rims, makes the 162 celica look 10 years newer. and probably an upgraded sound system.
then i'd probably leave it at that
I wouldn't bother with Air intake, extractors becuase honestly your throwing money down the drain, Toyota designed it just fine the first time. If you want noticable power upgrades then your looking at an engine swap (3sge gen2, gen2, 3s-gte etc) or expensive engine stuff like head porting, larger valves, cams, larger pistons, lightened flywheel. the list goes on the $$ add up.
sorry to break it to you

Hmmmm depends what ur after....
They got a bit of potential from a few mods...
I had a stock st162 but wanted something with a bit more balanced power response, extractors and exhaust are pretty decent NA mods... I think the stocky piping is 1.75" or 2", a increase to 2.25" would help a bit, lower down and it will rev cleaner.
The st162 has a fair decent amount of power stock so i'd be concentrating more on suspension and brakes... I have put king springs firmer rate spring, which have a nice amount of movement in the suspension, mistake with lowering cars is the fact that people try and lower their car in hope to stop bodyroll, the springs shouldn't have to stop bodyroll, its in the duty of the sway bar in which body movement is controlled.
Even on dead springs and shocks the rear sway bar will reduce body roll by a fair bit...
I'm pretty happy with performance at the moment after doin a k&n panel filter which helped a tiny bit but got it due to the fact that its reusable and helps the engine breathe a bit better...
Next thing on my list is gonna be to fix up the stereo and make her into a bit more of a cruiser for the summer, eg.. tinted windows, upgrade brakes.....
They do alright with a few mods
Later on the track she'll receive the exhaust, extractors and eventually a nice set of cams....
BROOM!!!!

I dunno about that man, your reducing your backpressure by doing that, and will lose power down low but will gain it up top.
Adding a better air filter would allow air to be sucked in easier, but the airflow meter is still the same, so gains would be minimal.
using top quality premium unleaded will probably see your most noticable power gains, as the ECU advances the timing.

Sorry, the ECU won't advance the timing, last I checked they don't have any form of knock sensor to notice the difference in fuel octane.

however a JDM ECU which is mapped differently should be a nice "plug n play" power upgrade for not too much dosh
has anyone actually done this?
zorst + intake will free up your top end heaps
if you can't get JDM ECU try advancing your timing a few degrees, running premium and listen carefully to make sure it ain't knocking and you will get a little kick too.
I also HIGHLY recommend a Oil-Catch can. older motor, valve-less crankcase ventalation = good cause for one

Adjust your AFM, Run 98 Octane fuel and give your dizzy a twist.
I did this and power gain was noticeable and car revved harder.
Probably could get away without AFM mod, some ppl say it does nothing, just costs more fuel.
Yes it does use more fuel, but not much, and you can on 98 octane advance timing to about 16 degrees BTDC. Pulls harder mid range, and doesnt seem to choke from 5500rpm onwards.
Oh and it costs $0 and 15 minutes time,
cheers,
Adam

Technically if you wanted to gain power you'd adjust your AFM to think it was getting less air (stiffer) - thus running leaner, and technically costing less in fuel.
Risks are associated with that though.

As much as I soooo wouldn't bother with an st162, if I were enthusiastic about one, I would do the following:
Engine:
4 into 1 extractors, 1.75" primaries into 2.5" collector
2.5" 'cat-back' exhaust system (with free flowing cat)
piss off the AFM and install Megasquirt...
288deg camshafts
clean up castings in the head and port match.
blah blah airfillet o fish and some cold air on the side.
Suspension/Drivetrain/Etc:
TruTrac LSD
Coilovers
4 spot calipers w/vented discs on front
2 spot calipers w/whatever discs on rear
Tune the car to run about 12.5:1 AFR under WOT and heavy load, run about 13~14:1 for lighter loads, and obviously closed loop for crusin
Then for more fun, try and make the bastard lighter.
But then, why would I bother with a fwd car....

buck naked wrote on Thu, 14 October 2004 03:17 | Do I want to be running the mixture leaner or richer?
I have a pod air filter, does that mean that more air is coming through the AFM causing it to run leaner? I'm happy to run 98 octane fuel, if it will allow me to improve my performance.
Also, is it recommended to reset the ECU before making changes? Where abouts is the fuse you need to pull?

in the fuse box
in the engine bay. just open the fuse box and it will tell you which one is the efi fuse.

If i had an unlimited budget...
- BEAMS 3S-GE out of the ST202
- Suspension mods
- Nice light weight wheels
- Make it as light as possible
- ST165 front bar (sexy)
