What are the perceptions, the myths, anything, about us Americans in general. I know most people from other states in the US think all Californians live by a beach and surf, but what do you think. Just wonderin as I think I'm a bit of a rare species on this board...

Hi,
I think that America went from barbarism to capitalism and bypassed civilization.
The world, in general, thinks you're a very arrogant and very ignorant nation. But, I do respect and admire your patriotism - I wish Australians could feel as proud of their country as the yanks do of theirs - of course, without the hubris.
Of all your states, California would rank as my fave. I love San Francisco. I'd love Hawaii more if there were less Japs running around the place.
If you come out with sensible posts in this forum, you'll be even that more rare

Some of the better American bands are out of CA... Couple that with the certain cities that have the whole beach scene and I give it the thumbs up. Although Ive never been, its probably the closest thing resembling Australia in the states.. sept CA prolly has more whacko's and is less laid back. 
You know how All Americans think all Aussies tackle crocs? And then we laugh and say its not true.. well we're kidding it is true.

Calafornia was pretty cool when i was there last year.....
LA is dirty city, so much polution and hollywood is just a sleazy talked up version of sydney kings X.
San diego and the lower west coast is awesome along the beaches.
We also took the coast road from frisco to LA in our 36ft motor home. That was a well sketchy trip along some very windy roads.
However, calafornias seemed mesmorised by an aussie, or more to the point, our accent.
Hell i had one chick at a surfshop beleiving that the billabong brand was invented by my uncle and that i had a pet koala, and kangaroos are a common sight in the CBD of sydney.
oh so gullible.
All in all, the place is cool, but the people need to get outside their little world (ie USA).
oh and your waves suck.

My perception of americans is patriotic and loud. Although, I haven't met that many so...? Every American girl I have met so far has been so stuck up it isn't funny? I don't know if that has been a coincidence though
River: what is wrong with the japanese? I know when I was there, I didn't meet one unfriendly person.
And BTW 2-skinny I have a heap of kangaroos at my university if that makes the place sound any better

Never met anyone from California
Met a few from Seattle though, very nice people.
My general opinion of America isnt very high, mainly because of the level of poverty and the defence budget...

patriotism is all well and good, but in general americans have too much of it. California.... well, as everyone says, you have arnie as gov., which is very cool. I'm not so impressed by the beaches and women because, well, being in sydney we have loads of good beaches and hot women
Of course, for every loud obnoxious american I've met, I've also met some really cool polite ones, and have a bunch of friends who have moved from the usa here. Thinking of the "deep south' always brings to mind images of deliverance, and people in white hoods
Seriously though, stereotypes aside, australians are basically a more laid back, less violent version of americans

I hate the American govornment with a passion. I understand that it is detached somewhat from some of the American people (just like the stupid Australian govornment is detached from me) so I don't hold it against indevidual American, just the nation as a whole.
It wouldn't bother me so much if John Howard didn't have his head so far up Bush's arse that he can't even remember what daylight is.
