probably a stupid question I know but I have tried it at both extremes of rotation, can't pick a performance difference nor does it ping...

help.

after turning i believe u have to short circuit something before u see any difference. thats how it works on 16v 4age, not sure about 20v though

It's a stupid question, but only because Toyota knew more than you when setting up the timing advance for best performance.

If you want more performance, you'll need to change the operating characteristics of the motor before you'll see an appreciable reward for changing ignition timing.

You are doing this without a timing light??

I'm not surprised you can't tell a performance difference and you're damn lucky it's not pinging.

That said, if you wanna run a random ~25deg advance for no reason at all and take the risk of failure, go ahead.

SSI,

Thanks, for the contructive critisism Embarassed
I can understand where you are coming from ...I'm a bit of a newbie to this shit.
I haven't bridged anything (pins in the diagnotics connector?) so I guess thats why I don't notice a difference.
i will now set it back to what it was and try and find a mechanic that knows 20V's to make sure everything is as it should be (I'm sure it's not, it idles at 500rpm)

Any suggestions for who to see in Brisbane?

Thanks,
Julian.

the place to short circuit/bridge should be on a diagram somewhere in ur engine bay. probably on the bonet or on the wall between passangers and engine.

usually bridging E1 and T or something similar, this will let you see the proper timing but you need a timing light

if you fully retarded your timing it will go like crap. if you fully advance your timing, your motor probably got a knock sensor will kick in and retard your timing for you and again will go like crap. and you might not hear pinging, just feel the car feels flat

turning the dizzy body opposite/against the direction the rotor turns, will advance ignition.

the lack of change is VERY unusual, and i think impossible.
sure you're not doing/turning something else????????????????

i have no experience with 20V ST.

presume u already know how to advance the timing but here's how i do it anyway (without timing light)

advance the timing as much as u can b4 the pinging sound comes on!!

- short circuit the thing after every adjustment

Sorry if I was forceful. I think Toyota probably had a good idea what they were doing when setting up the advance curve for 20V Silvertop; to derive any advantage you'd need to make a substantial change to the motor's operating spec. There is no such thing as a free lunch unfortunately.

Agreed that there are likely to be bugger all gains to be made on the original ecu however I am the third owner of this 20V after it was converted, so who knows what previous mechanics/hacks have done. Thats why I thought I'd change it and see what happens. Preferably I would rather take the car to someone who knows 20V's and get em to set it all to factory settings.

Any ideas who to take it to in Brisbane?

Thanks for all the feedback guys,
Julian

PS. Has anybody read the stuff on this site regarding 20V tuning? He states on one page that there are 11 different ST M/T ecu variations, anyone know the differences?
