Opinions and Feedback: CA18DE AE86

Hey guys,
was tossing up this idea on trd-spec but didn't really get much feedback on the overall cost, feasiblity and practicality of such a swap
I'm sure you're all getting tired of ae86 engine swaps so please keep all negative feedback to urself and you won't even notice this thread is here..
I originally came up with the thought of a ca18det after seeing simons... so you can think him for th einflux on ca18det sprinters u'll see around i guess.. But after hunting around for engines, my budget was becomming stressed... i also realised to drive a ca18det sprinter would be an illegal matter on my p's...
so i thought... CA18DE... it's got the same range as a 4age... and people are practicliy BEGGING people to take them off their hands... and when im off my p's... i'll have a bit more money and knowledge and can quite easily afford a better more powerfull engine if i see fit.. and it will no longer be able to drive a 130kw engine in a 900kg car...
So... my question is... how much more would be involved in this swap as opposied to a 16v 4age? Would it be a lot harder? Would my overall cost end up being that of a 4age 16v swap, or more... or less? Would custom mounts be hard to make? would wiring become a problem?
any help on the issue would be greatly appretiated... thanks in advance
shiri

the biggest hassel you will run into is things like bell housings and / or gearboxes matching up, and of course, engineering certificate.
this will stress the budget somewhat more than the typical 4AGE conversion.

i dont know why you would choose this over a 100kw 4a-ge. The swap is much easier and been done to death and its really only a difference of 5 kw, is it really worth all that hassle for a slightly larger engine?
Also you'll need to get it engineered because that engine never came with that chassis

the reason behind the move was i can pick up a ca18de really really cheap... where as a complete 4age is gonna cost me another 1k more...

you could always try source a bigport 4a-ge (87kw)
Even cheaper and it's not really that hard to get an extra 13kw out of the engine

The cost of the engine would not be the major cost when doing the CA18 conversion. Think about engine custom mounts, maybe custom crossmember, custom gearbox crossmember and mounts, plumbing and wiring everything up etc.
While a 4AGE may cost a little more to start with, in the end it will end up being cheaper due to re-use of mounts, gearbox and so on. Plus there are heaps of walkthroughs and advice around for this conversion.
I just don't see a CA18 being worth it, especially if you plan to have it engineered.

if you were doing a ca18de you'd use the ca gearbox not the t50. that would be a headfuck making a custom bellhousing and shit.
i dont see anything wrong with putting the ca18de in if you were planning on putting a ca18det in later. you need to mod the engine mounts and gearbox mounts, cut a hole for the shifter and get the tailshaft modded.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing, only DET and in an RA60 celica.. there is a thread on an SR20 conversion, which is basicly the same, and there is also some talk about the CA18 as well..
