testing 2nd hand turbo

Could somebody please give me some general things to test when looking at buying a 2nd hand turbo.
I know to wiggle the shaft left and right & up and down and check for movement. Should be less than 1mm. And I can spin it to make sure the bearings aren't noisy or the wheel doesn't scrape on the housing.
I am not sure if I can spin it quick enough to make the bearings make any noise however.
What else to do?

If you can get a dial guage, check the end play and lateral shaft movement. You'll have to check what the acceptable limits of these for the particular turbo. And even if it doesn't tell you much, you'll look really professional.

Nothing, short of seeing it run on the car it came from - it's really pot luck. I've bought turbos that felt perfect, only to discover they had been oil starved and needed a rebuild before even using.

i once bought an r33 turbo (ceramic turbine) off some guy on this forum with approx 80,000kms on it, only to have it snap after 10 mins of use.
there was no shaft play and it looked clean. its all pot luck.

yes i would also like to know if you threw the turbo through his window, that would have shown some serious self control, I would have bashed his head in with it
