My mum is buying an used car. Toyota of course. Very Happy
Need some advice and opinions on our following options.

Option 1:
1989 Toyota Camry 2.5L V6 ZVZ21/VZV21 Auto 4sp. Sedan with 175,000kms for $7500

Option 2:
1992 Toyota Corolla Seca 1.6L 4AFE ae92/?94 Auto 3sp. Liftback with 195,000kms for $7000

Please note they are dealer prices.
Would like your input please. Any other car model recommendations too. Gotta buy something very soon.

From what I've heard, the engines in those Camrys are pretty unreliable. Can't remember the actual problems though.

If it's been well maintained then shouldn't be a problem though...

There's a lot of kms on those cars! Why not look for something with fewer kms?

That is way overpriced for that corolla, by over 2k in my opinion, especially for a car that's done so many k's............

The price is so high cause of the dealer situation... They always add like 2k to the price tag... I'd also look for something with less k's on the clock...
We've never had any major probs with Camry's at my work (Chatswood Toyota)... They are usually just in for services...

The problem would be sludging. Common if the oil isn't of a good quality on the 1, 2 & 3VZFE. Also those k's looks like it's nearing the end of their lives. If they don't mind what kinda car it looks like, then even the wide body Camry would do nicely. The 5SFE I think is the pick of the bunch for reliability and longevity. 3VZ wasn't a particularly "reliable" engine comparatively.

Bounty: i was contemplating that option, but seeing the white one isnt up to scratch body wise, i couldnt be bothered. Plus she can't and will not learn manual, so unless it can be mated to the 3 speed auto transmission. I have to give that though a miss Razz

SmellyTofu: yeah im still not sure what to do. Those above options will have to be crossed off. We'll just continue to look around more.
For more toyota's.
Almost got lured into buying a Hyundai Sonata 1991 ?GLS with all power options for $5800 but with 179,000kms.

forget a 6 cyl camry, stick to 4, more than enough power for your mum (unless she drives like me)
at my house there are 3 genII camry's (well one's a holden apollo...) none of them have ever had engine troubles, only mine has a reconditioned gearbox and new clutch, kms are:
195,000
189,000 and
187,000
and if you can stay away from the executive model (dodgy plastic interior and no folding rear seats)

Who says 175,000 is approaching the end? I got 260,000km/s on the Seca SX and life is just beginning for that car! it never misses a beat and pulls hard as if not harder than alot of fresher ones.

Matt, the V6 camry should be fine coz I know you'll maintain it, just like her old corolla sedan Razz Also, I've seen the V6 Camry's go. Not bad at all. Quad Cam, 24 Valve.. there's some good hardware there and the inside of those cars are pretty plush. Also, Camry's are less prone to rust than an AE92 Secas and if the Seca don't have air-con, forget it.

I'd suggest you look around a bit more. the two models you've chosen aren't exactly fine examples from the toyota stable.

the SV21 camrys are pretty old now,and are generally pretty sloppy suspension-wise,and have a quite average interior-both cramped, and clunky.
what's been said about the engines getting gummy is true,I've seen it myself a few times.
the MCV10 widebodies are the go,if it's a cheap camry you're after.

the AE92 is the worst of the FF corollas IMHO. shocking seating position, and appalling brakes.
if you hunted around some, and bargained a little, you could likely get an AE102 for the same money,a far better car,in all areas, and newer.
the 4AFEs rarely have problems. rental cars prove that...

good luck!

Justin...

No offence, but my friend has a Holden Nova, the AE92 one. Got to be the nastiest brakes I've used on a newer car, and that includes my gf's Daewoo Matiz...now thats saying something.

I've driven every Rolla up to the AE9x, and all their brakes suck!
Even the SX/GTi with MetalKings sucked.

Haha, amen. Very Happy

Rollaboy,
We must have a different definition of what fine is then. You're not alone though, my friend doesn't seem to notice either. I get in and they are so poor that it scares me, even my 20yo RA60 pulls up a SHITLOAD better.

The RA6x actually have some of the best brakes that I've ever used, so it's kinda harsh comparing other cars to it... Remember, they share the same discs as the MA6x Supras which were a lot heavier.

I remember when I first bought my car and had to brake suddenly for a dog. Locked them up real good. Lucky the dog stopped from the noise.

Yeh, point taken. I must admit, my first impression of my ae82 brakes were not to my liking. It could be a lot better.
Oh well, that will soon be changed i hope.

6 inches means a lot dude... Smile
And it's not hard for any car to haul better than a stock RA60..... The RA60 is weighed down by a boat achor... Very Happy
