Hi Guys,
I am new to this forum, so hello everyone.
I purchased a GT4 about 3 weeks ago. I am very happy with it. The car has 183 clicks on it. It has been taken car of really well, so i am very happy.
Below are the specs:
1990 Celica GT4 (Burgundy)
Aftermarket stuff:
1. 2.5 Mandrel bent exhaust
2. Hi-flow Cat
3. Dump pipe
4. Turbosmart BOV/Manual Boost (running on 12psi) controller
5. K&N Filter
6. Pedders Lowered
Other Extras:
1. Autometer boost guage
2. Leather wheel, knob
3. Sports pedals
4. New Pioneer MP3 Deck + a few other sound goodies.
The only problem with the car is with 1st and 2nd gears, they are a little sticky and sometimes a bit annoying to shift into and from. Any suggestions to fix this?
A few questions.
What other mods/rebuilds should i look into if I want to make the engine more solid. It has 185 clicks on it, and although it runs well, should I be looking into rebuilding anything soon?
How difficult is it to source a front mount for it, and how much would this cost. I am aware that I would need to source a Group A nost for it.
I will post a few pics when I get my Camera back.
Thanks guys.

Hey mate, congrats on the purchase
I just bought a GT4 Group A about 3 weeks ago also. Awesome cars, although mine has 210,000kms on it!
The gear problem sounds like the typical syncho wear that the ST185's suffer from, you could try changing the gear box fluid, and adding some Nulon gear box treatment to it. If that doesnt help then it's probably worth trying to source out a Group A box, as they have triple synchro's which mostly eliminates the problem.
I'm trying to hold some money aside for when the inevitable happens (i.e. needs a rebuild!), but these engines are pretty tough if treated well. Personally I wouldnt go for a rebuild until it needs doing, but if you are planning on running higher boost, it may be worth while upgrading the stock head gasket to a better one, as they are a weakness in the 3sgte.
Not sure about the front mount, I'm sure someone here can help you.
If you don't mind me asking, roughly how much did you pick yours up for? I paid $11500 for mine, needed a few things fixed up to be roadworthy, but I've probably only spent $500 on it so far anyway!
Good luck with it, I'm sure we'll see you round the forums lots!

still some redline in there...that should help out the syncro problems in the shortterm..
otherwise, source an st205 box...and if you find one, contact me and tell me if there's another one available
congrats on your purchases guys

Thanks for the reply guys
I paid 11.5 for mine as well tooch. For a Group A, you paid a pretty good price. The only group A I saw for sale here was 17k, with 230 clicks on it. They front of those looks so sexy
Anyways, where can I purchase this Nulon stuff? Is this something I can pick up from Autobarn?
Stock12: If I decide to go for a 205 box, how much would I be looking at for one that is in good condition?
At the moment, I have the funds to do whatever needs to be done to make the car a little more solid. I would probably go for the transmission first as that has the shift issues.
If anyone has any advice on a front mount, please let me know.
I also spent about $400 on getting the BOV and HiCat refitted for the RWC, pain in the ass really. Apparently the HiCat was too low, and BOV's are illegal here in the ACT.
One more thing, this car hates Caltex Vortex. Could find any Optimax when I filled up last week
Here is a link to some pics the seller sent me a few weeks ago.
Suggestions please

Yeah I was lucky, i rang the guy the moment I saw it. By the way, the car was originally from victoria, i however am from Canberra. I had the car transported here, the plates have changed since then. Unfortunatley I couldnt get slim plates either because they are illegal here also. Funny how porn and weed are legal here but BOV's and slim plates aren't.
So the rims you got on at the moment are they one you got it with? The current ones look good, they look like some Sparcos that used to be available.
I'd love to go to meetups, however I dont know anyone else in Canberra with a GT4. I'm guessing I own the only burgundy GT4 in the ACT too.

Ahh k fair enough! Slim lines illegal, that's funny as!
Yeah they are Sparco 17's, came with the car. They are in fairly ordinary condition though, very scratched/peeled, and they are a WRX offset, so they don't stick out far enough at the back!
I'm deciding whether or not to get them repaired/powder coated, and get some proper spacers made up for the back, or just sell them and buy some new ones.

Yeah I've always loved white rims
I wonder if the current wheels would look ok powdercoated white?
Especially with some spacers, and once the car is lowered with its new suspension, I reckon it might look real nice

Actually the only other thing that is wrong with the car is the fuel guage. As far as the previous owner knows, it was working fine until it arrived here.
Anyways, the needle gets to half way fine, and then it just stops dropping. Anyone know if this can be fixed, or should I look into getting a replacement? I had a look in the boot, theres a small rectangular plate there that looks like the fuel guage thingy, am I correct here? My Chiltons manual doesn't cover this area unfortunately
Last weekend I took it up to the coast. As I was leaving early in the morning (on my way to fill up) the car died. I was thinking the worst, naturally given that I'd just got the car. Then I realized I'd done 534km's since the last fill, so I figured the needle was screwed. Lucky a dude from up the street drove past, and took me to the servo to get some juice

Sledge: Damn good value! We never see them like that in Vic!
Zasa: I suppose you could do it without dumping the old fluid, but while you're mucking around down there I'd just change the lot. The Nulon itself is unlikely to do much, but combined with some better quality fluid (some people like to even use ATF when their synchros are worn) should make some difference. It worked on my Corolla, worth a try before you go all out on a new box.
