The good old UAI. I was the in the first yr12 yr to go through it.
It all depends on your score in relation to what other people have gotten. IE. If you get 68 in a test and 60% of the population get below 65 you get grouped up! how cool!.
My marks were all above 68 and below 72. (both test and class work) but it just so happened that there was an echelon of people 73+ hence i got marked down severly. my UAI?..... below 40.
This got me enraged and thinking... Look at it like this.
If you score 98 on all tests and 98 on all classwork but the rest of the population score 99 and 100. Guess what your UAI is?. Thats right.... do not pass go, do not collect $200.. do not get the right to go to uni. Because you got 98... and your the dumbest kid in Australia.
Worst Idea Ever.

Yeah it's a stupid system I hate it.
Didn't even feel like HSC to me. I did English to me and I was kind of relaxing through it and eating lollies lol.
It's pretty stupid because if you don't get the course at the uni you want, you go to another one then transfer a year later.
VERY STUPID SYSTEM.

just so none of you high-schoolers freak, here's what a lot of high schools dont tell you.
* Pretty much no matter what, you can get into your chosen course at uni. You simple enrol in whatever you can make it into, (BA and BSc are good choices), take electives that will lead on to whatyou want to do. Do well, and apply for a transfer
* once you make it into a course, no one gives a rats arse about your UAI - so be like me, and do the bare minimum of work required (in my case, about a total of 10 hours study)

Exactly. My friend (wanted to get into Comp. Science) just went to TAFE and got a dilpoma and then the next year he transferred to UWS and guess what? He was exempt first year uni!
So let's see:
He doesn't do well in the HSC, his friends study their arses off and go straight to uni. Now he's in exactly the same position as them, except at TAFE it's always hands on infront of the computer so he has practical experience and they've only done the theory.
"But hang on!" you say. They're at Sydney uni and he's at UWS. Sydney uni is heaps more prestigeous.
True.
So the year after that he transferred to Sydney uni and ended up getting his masters there.
So he goes to tafe while they go to uni and basically they all end up finishing at the same place.
Two years after you get your UAI nobody will remember what you got or even give a f*ck!
ARRRRGH I hate how my parents f*cking care. Oh well.
/end rant.

Exactly. Except like you & draven said, it's not two years. It's however long it takes for you to get accepted into some course (any course).. then just get decent marks & switcherooney.
Let me assure you sydney uni aint so freekin prestigious once you get past the sandstone.. it's probably a bit different for Japanese language courses, as its pretty popular, but i did indonesian here, & it was short of funds to the point that one full-time staff member constituted the whole department.
but then, nothing seems all that prestigious at this time of morning. Just think, study hard & in six years time you could be dribbling shit on toymods at 4;20am cos you just wrote about 2000 words of thesis since midnight & you can't switch off
edit: Good Luck!

my course is only at one uni (Bacheler Computer Eng, Master Biomedical Eng at UNSW) so for soe people theres heaps less choice.
Quote: | My estimate is 82-89

|
dont worry about that, my mark was a few points higher than the estimate and the entrance mark for my course droped from 96 to 90. shit like that happens coz heaps of people go "i'm never gonna get 96" so nobody puts it down and so the entrance mark drops.
oh yeah and making english compulsary is fukd up
