ive seen it done in an AE82 in a magazine apparently it used a camry gearbox as it fit better and is stronger(dont quote me on it)
so it will fit but with alot of effort

mickeyz would be the man to ask, he has done a 3SGTE AE82 conversion.

Be prepared for your wallet to be sucked dry though.

yeah thought it was a pretty rare conv.
id probebly just buy a n14 pulsar 2.0L and put a sr20det turbo setup on it. and it would be heaps easier and much more cost.

Probably better to use an MR2 Turbo gearbox as this is stronger than the Camry and doesn't have the 4WD part like the GT4.

There will never be a simple step by step guide for doing this conversion. Because so many things need to be changed, there would be many different ways of doing it, and it depends on what you are building it for. That engine is not ment to be in that car. Everything needs to be made fore it. New engine mounts and crosmember for starters I would think. Custom driveshafts as well probably. You just have to be brave, buy a 3S engine and gearbox. Buy a few different gearboxes, driveshafts, struts, brakes etc so you can decide what you want to use. Pull your engine out and strip the car. Lower the new 3S engine in and decide where you want it. Weld up mounts. etc...

Oh well I figured I'd put in my 5 cents now.....

Its hard to do a step by step guide because each car is different, I cant tell you millimetre for millimetre where to relocate the engine mounts and exactly where they should sit...that requires you to fit the motor in the engine bay, do the correct measurements beforehand and if you have done it right it will line up first try, the trick is to get the driveshafts centered correctly, they are the biggest problem if they arent right, the cvs wear quickly and damage..

V6 camry gearbox isn't that strong, it will hold up but only for so long....its not the right box to use, final drive ratio is completely wrong (3.6 or 3.93), and gear ratios are the same as the MR2 turbo box...but MR2 turbo box uses a 4.285 final drive. gears are 3.23/1.9/1.25/0.92/0.73, so imagine with 3.6 or 3.93 gears they are damn tall and this loads your gearbox up quite a bit, so now imagine why you are breaking them constantly with all the torque the 3sgte makes...hell of a lot more than a 3.0L v6 camry and delivery is very sudden rather than progressive.

Driveshafts will fit, to a degree, they dont need to be shortened or anything like that, but with V6 camry or MR2 shafts, the outer CV joint is wrong....the splines dont match the Corolla hubs....you need to use the outer CV joint off the GT4 celica (st185/205) and an inner bearing cage to suit the splines on the shaft and cv joint.

You dont need to make engine mounts, but you need GT4 engine mount brackets to weld in and adapt, which is quite straight forward when you have them in front of you. the cross member requires only minor modifications, and with an AE92 you could possibly even use an AE92 GZE x-member and I have this feeling it will fit perfectly, since the rear mount sits lower and further back. The AE82 requires modifications to be made to the rear of the member, the mount has been to moved back one bolt hole at the front (should be pre-drilled) and you have to drill a new hole for the rear mount bolt, its around 20-30mm back, and also make a 30mm solid spacer to push the x-member off the chassis and longer bolts, this clears the bellhousing this way.

Now that you have done this, your going to need the GT4 radiator, because I guarantee a normal Corolla one will overheat on boost....the GT4 core is so much larger, you will probably need twin thermofans, (std fans dont clear turbo) just to get the radiator cool when u idle, (engine bay gets very hot, lack of room). Then you need to do shitloads of wiring and adapting, and relocating of everything, upgrade fuel and brake system, upgrade front springs to take the extra 150odd KG from the conversion...

It added close to 150kg to my AE82 corolla...so it weighs around 1080kg DRY now....and it will understeer much more too....you need very good tyres to grip, and it will torque steer quite a lot (I dont notice it much anymore, but mates reckon im constantly fighting the wheel on boost in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear to keep it straight) like I said torque comes on very hard

Then you need a custom exhaust system, new intercooler at the front, no room for aircon or power steering (mine has neither). You need to use GT4 selector cables (ST185 cables for mine) and celica shifter (mine is ST204), AE82/92 cables/shifter dont have enough travel to engage all gears.

There are lots of other little things too, but this is all I can think off the top of my head. As a benchmark plan around 6K+ to pay somebody to do it on top of the halfcut =]
Its a big muck around job, we spent a good 500hrs between 2 of us doing it...so don't think its a weekend walk in the park job, lots of little things require custom brackets and modifications to fit and you will find this out when you attempt it.

As a benchmark, mine makes around 140kW @ wheels (on perfectly accurate dyno) on 14psi boost 8degrees BTDC timing, STD Jap ecu, and ran a 14.43 @ 99mph recently with a 2.4 60ft....very lazy off the line, but its almost impossible to get off quickly with street tyres. (also running 9-10psi boost 1st, 2nd, then 14.5psi 3rd -> )

Michael.

thats excellent!!!
are the ae92 engine bays much bigger- therefore easier?

I couldnt follow the bit about the driveshafts. do you use the ae82 hubs and part of the ae82 driveshafts then adapt them to the celica/camry shafts?

anyway that was heaps helpful.

cheers.

i have ae92 gze hubs in mine, but Iguess AE82 hubs would work, never tried, but the AE92 gze hubs are much bigger, I am planning to run St185 gt4 hubs in the near future...
