icon5.gif  great tyres for cornering (225 x 60 x 14)? Mon, 18 October 2004 07:36 Go to next message
I have a friend with a 68 Mustang looking for replacement tyres. He was impressed with his current tyres but they have been discontinued. Doesn't want "mum and dad" tyres, which is all that he has been able to find.

His spec: "The wheels are 12 Slots 14x7. The current tyres are Dunlop Formula W10 205x60x14. They really should have been 225x60x14 or 225x65x14."

Any recommendations?

225/60x14 is the same size used by MA61 Supra's, and any MA61 owner will tell you there's very little available in that size. I'm really happy with the Yokohama A509's I bought a while ago, but they're discontinued now - you might find some old stock lying around though, so it doesn't hurt to ask. They were replaced by the A539 which is apparently quite good as well - not sure if it's available in that size though.

Yokohama Advans might be avalible in the size he wants.
Will really hang on in the corners but might not last to long.

Don't be afraid of 215s. They'll keep the sidewalls pulled tighter, and won't roll around on the rim as much, for the same tyre-pressure as the 225s.

Skinnier tyres on wide rims also break sideways earlier, gentler, with more warning etc. than fats on skinny rims. Fat tyres on little rims tend to hang on, rolling over until they're almost on the sidewall, then WHAMM!!! - They just let go completely. Nasty!!
