Hi all
I own a supercharged toyota hilux 4wd 4y-c motor sc14 charger.
Took it on stockton beach for a drive the other w/e and the intake temps were dangerously high.
I am chasing opinions/info on the best intercooler setp to run. At this stage i think it will have to be top mount possibly with bonnet vent (patrol style)
I need to find an intercooler that is most suited to low speed driving where there is not too much airflow. I.e hard 4 wheel driving. I will possibly be running water injection aswell.
I know this kind of driving is different to what you guys set your cars up for, but i dont know much about intercoolers so i'm hoping you guys can help.
The guy that dynoed my car said an rx7 series 4? 1989 model intercooler would be good as they are very efficient but recommended water injection too. he had one of these coolers in his shop and it looked like it would fit under the hood ok but i would not have much room to go too much bigger.
pics and dimensions of coolers would be a great help too
please help
Craig

Personally, I'd be suggesting a custom fabricated water/air cooler, if you can afford it. That way you can keep the 'essential' part of it up under the bonnet, out of harms way, but still get more effective cooling than you will with a top mount style cooler. A fan on the heat exchanger at the front of the car will allow effective cooling while off roading, and I think water injection is a great idea for any supercharged engine as well. You may be able to mix'n'match factory water intercooler parts from Subaru, 3SGTE, 1GGTE, etc. to good effect while still keeping the cost sensible. Have a think about how much you can manage to spend, and then go check out whats available at wreckers, etc.

If you are serious into 4WD then id go water to air. Ive just fitted a Liberty RS intercooler to my '04 TD Navara. Ive put a 12" fan on my water cooler, so when you are hacking around dunes at high RPM and low speed there is still plenty of air going through it. Think how well a top mount unit would work in the dunes, heat radiating up to it, no air circulation past = not vey good.
Price indication for my system:
Liberty Water to Air intercooler = $100
Liberty water cooler (radiator) = $100
Flojet circulation pump = $165
12" Thermo = $90
Hobbs switch = $10
Hoses, relays, clamps, fuses, switches etc. $100
Total = $565
Pretty good value, probably spent a total of 20 hours of my time on it though modifying the cooler, making brackets, wiring (yuk) etc.

that would be great if you could, pics of cooler would be great and year models etc for parts. I'm definately thinking water to air. 80+% of my driving is 4wding. which is of course slow but quite often at high revs.

had a look, dont have any current pics of what it looks like, will take some when it stops raining. It is just the sc14 bolted to the stock hilux motor currently running throttle body injection.
