Annoying whistle Tue, 19 October 2004 01:05 Go to next message
Hey guys has anyone ever had an annoying whistle coming from around this area when the throttle is pressed SLIGHTLY in the direction of the arrow? Any ideas what it could be? It does sound like a pressure leak but i can't find out where it's coming from apart from somewhere near the back of the circled area..

Also just wondering if anyone know what this screw does?

whistling noise could be an intake leak, like loose bolts or bad gasket lettting air in? hmm come to think of it it could be normal, my friends 3sge makes a whistling air sucking noise around the intake when you pull the thottle cable abit, of course the engine noise drowns the sound out the faster you rev it.

Ok that screw looks like the Air conditioner idle up screw. Turn your air con on, and turn that screw and see if the engine revs change.

I concur with dingaling. The circled object is called a "Air Bypass Valve" according to the toyota 3S-GTE manual. The small vacuum hoses from lead to your A/C VSV near your Brake Master Cylinder so controls your A/C idle up.

My 185 has a high pitched whistling noise that comes from that area while cold. On my car it was the T-VIS manifold located at the end of your intake runners going into the head...

I actually removed the intake manifold without removing the head to repair it....was an absolute bitch of a job but fixed it, and gave me more noticable low-end torque

If it is a vacuum leak, and you have a vacuum/boost gauge you may notice the noise goes away or changes as the vacuum in your drops (when you press the accelerator) mine stops at about 10 In.Hg on my gauge, and completely when the engine warms up a bit...

Yeah it doesn't really matter if it's cold or not but when i rev the car a bit more it does go away.. probably around the 15hg mark..not much at all...but while coasting along with just a little pressure on the throttle it whistles..so yeah it's annoying Sad
It does sound like an intake leak to me but of course that would change to an outlet leak under boost?
But it can't be too bad cos it's doesn't run rough or anything..
maybe i'll have to just put up with it...
Thanks dudes
