21R-Z (RA60 + SC14) Tue, 19 October 2004 07:03 Go to next message
hey all, I have mounted a sc14 in my engine bay. im now upto the plumbing part atm. I am planning to remote mount my 32/36 weber carby to allow for the suck thru setup. Today I went and got an ae82 throttle cable, damn they is long!

has anyone had any experience doing custom sc1x installs? just like to know how it went, problems encountered, etc.

As you can see, its very tight for plumbing, this is gonna be a nightmare. I need to find a supplier of 90deg steel bends.

Note: I used the electromagnetic pulley from my original A/C to allow me to run a V belt. The ribbed belt was gonna be a whore. I've noticed almost everyone whos done this used the ae82/92?? power steering pulley n tensioner....

While I've never done a custom SC14 install, I think your #1 problem is going to be belt slippage! You need a lot of power to turn a blower at full noise, and I have a feeling that skinny little V-belt isn't "quite" up to the task...

I'll 2nd that.
Toyota used a factory ribbed belt for a reason
Maybe you can use a different crank pulley, or bolt on a gilmer thingo.

As above.

Also you may wish to see if a 22RE manifold bolts up - it will look a lot tidier than the 21R carb manifold and will greatly simplify plumbing. You might even want to consider running the analogue EFI, a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and boost retard on the dizzy.

Interesting project.

Been there, done that.

The 22RE manifold doesn't bolt up. The bolt holes on the 21R head would foul on the injectors... I made up an adaptor plate and had it all mounted. But yeah, never went thru with it. Kinda gave up.

Also thanks guys for the input regarding the belt slippage. I'll try the V belt at first, but if it does slip, ill swap the ribbed pulley back on and go from there.

EDIT: Thought I'd add some pics of that trial and error...

Sorry bout the size of the pics. The 5m-e throttle body sure looks great tho.

I agree on the belt issue, but it sounds like you're bery aware of that already.

You can get steel bends from a freindly exhaust place. I just picked up a bunch of mandrel bent 2" sections that were lying around the local place.

Good luck, this looks interesting.

The EFI setup looks good... I'd strongly recommend finishing that project, it will make the end result much much better! Carbies and forced induction are generally not a good combination...
