4A-C Help Needed Urgently Tue, 19 October 2004 08:31 Go to next message
My sprinter engine has suddenly started running rough in the bottom half of the rev range. Worked fine this morning, but when I started it after work this afternoon, it started idling rough. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it may be? I have already checked the spark leads and distributor. Don't think it will be the plugs, because they were replaced on the weekend. I'm hoping it isn't a blown head gasket, but so far, it is all I can think of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

bobski - have already looked at the carby, and I don't think it is the butterfly, cos it wasn't shaking around.

Have checked the vacuum hoses, and found one cracked. Replaced it but it is still doing it.

Might have to check the manifold gasket though as that could be the problem... one other question, will it still be alright to drive, or will that just compound the problem?

It all depends on what the fault is... Personally, I would
do a good insection to mave sure it isnt anything to do with the cam/ valves, If it isn't this then I'd drive it home to look a lil closer to see what it might be. Check vacuum hoses for leaks, generally if there are leaks in the hoses, they will only open up once the engine is warm. Vaccum hoses show up as fine when they are cold. Check dizy bolt hasn't come loose, check leads are secure, eliminate a spark fault... Check for fuel fault, Fuel pump working fine? Check fuel filter... Is air filter clogged? If its none of those then your going to have to start looking at the engine a lil closer. Those are the first obvious things to look at. There may be a leak in the manifold gasket, no way of really checking this without removing it. Is the head gasket fine, may have blown a hole through one of the sides.. Hopefully not. It will still get you home..
