icon2.gif  Ideal operating temp for a 7M-GTE? Tue, 19 October 2004 12:19 Go to next message
I'm getting a temp gauge hooked up to my 7M because I fear it may be running a little hot (I don't trust the digital display).

Does anyone know what the ideal operating temp range is for a 7M-GTE? And what temp would be considered to be starting to run a little too hot?

Standard thermostat is 88C, so they usually operate around 92-95C.

Awesome - thanks for your help.

What would you say was a dangerous temperature to be operating at? Anything over 96 degrees?

nah, something over 104deg would be bad
But maybe even higher.
my 1uz fans currently turn on at 94, but I was thinking of changing that to 98.

do the 1uz and 7m run at roughly equivelant operating temps?

I would have thought that the 1uz was a little more robust and would probably have better heat tolerance. Does anyone know for sure?

Be careful with the advice that is being offered. With people suggesting temp ranges from 82-96 someone is feeding you crap rather than fact. Toyota will be able to provide you with the temp range for thermostats for particular engines and I would be following this specification. Remember that Toyotas tend to run in the 82-85 range, although there are some variations. I still get to stare at the 1ggte sitting in the corner with a blown head gasket because I followed someones advice to use a Camira thermo swith for the fan (96 deg).

The message that I am trying to get across is to be real careful of advice that you get from internet experts and be careful when you respond with opinion as you could cost someone heaps.

Well for those interested I just spoke to the workshop at Toyota Castle Hill. The fellow there semed to think that if I was giving the engine a "hard time" it should peak at about 95-97 degrees, and that anything over that is dangerous, and has potential to cause problems.

Just in case you guys were interested!
