4AGE problems - help needed Please!!!

Ok guys,
Here's the problem, i have a 87 seca with the 100kw smallport engine in it, after driving the car for a little while it starts to "miss", becomes jolty through the rev range. i am unsure of what it can be because i've replaced the leads, dizzy cap and the rotor button.
The next thing on my list is to replace the spark plugs. Its got me stumped because it only does it sometimes, not all the time.
When this problem started there was a bit of water around the spark plugs because i washed the car, wasn't careful with the hose (bonnet scoop). After i got all the water out it was fine for a couple of weeks, then it started to "miss" at higher revs, now it has started doing it right through the rev range.
I have had a couple of mechanics look at it now, and no one can come to a conclusion and tell me what it is. So thats why i'm here for help.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know ASAP because its really starting to shit me.
Cheers
Bourny

Hey does it usually do it not only at certain revs but at certain speeds like 100km???. Cause my old 4AC 86 use to do similar things at higher speeds. Thanks to the people of toymods and auto1 i found out it was my fuel filter (dirty as!). other wise it could be your spark plugs but yeah best of luck JoHnNy_K

Thanks for your advise, i had my fuel filter replaced last service (3000kms ago). So i don't think that would be it. As for a certin speed, no it does it at all speeds. Just not all the time.
I'm going to get some new plugs asap, what sort do you guys recommend?
Cheers

This might sound a bit dumb, but how do you set the timing on these engines?
I don't have the diagnostic box at all, so i can't short out any terminals etc.
I was told by a mechanic that fuel injected cars should never need the timing adjusted.
Could someone give me a quick run through of how to adjust the timing and what i need to do it.. does it need to be 10 degress BTDC?
Thanks for your help.

We were told the same by the local mechanics that serviced my brother's EB fairmont... they replaced ignition module cause the last one died of heat...
Thing was pinging for a year, they could never hear any noise...
Went into Ford and they adjusted the timing back to run on 91RON...
Lesson... get more opinions
As for your 4ag, does it cut in and out when accellerating?

Yea it cuts in and out only when accelerating, which becomes very jolty the whole time.
I don't know what to do, i might get the timing checked after work today, i hope thats the problem. i'm no mechanic.
So can someone give me a quick idea of what to do, and i want tools i need?
Cheers

Ok, i've done some reading.
I know how to adjust the timing, but how do i do it if i don't have the diagnostic box in the engine bay? can i adjust the timing without shorting out the terminals because i don't have them?
Also, is there a chance it could be one of the wires coming out of the dizzy? there is a yellow plug which i had a wire resoildered a couple of months back. because it caused my car not to start, which i couldn't find the problem for a few days.
I really need to get this fixed asap.
Someone must know how to fix it.
Please help guys.

it could be your injectors,
take them out and get them ultrasonically cleaned.

what about your injectors? it really does sound like an ignition problem..but maybe you could pop them out and get them cleaned somthing like $20-25 each if you give it to an injector place..i did it with mine for shits and giggles and it ran heaps better! i actually noticed a difference and fuel consuption was better..

Thats what i was thinking, thats getting done today.
But that wouldn't cause the car to run this bad, also doesn't cause it to misfire and backfire.
I've asked a couple of mechanics and the injectors aren't able to make the car run as bad as it does at the moment.
Any other ideas?
I was thinking maybe something to do with the ECU and wiring? is this possible?
The car doesn't do it when its cold, only after its warmed up for a bout 30mins of driving, then it does it very bad.
Please help.
