Supra\Cressida slip yolk with renewable uni's

I went to get my tailshaft lenghtened today and it became apparent that all the uni's were quite worn.Quote around $700 to do the job-but wait-there's more! We cant do it sir! bla bla the unis are not replaceable bla bla. What a hassle.
Tomorrow hopefully will find a shop who has some "special" bits. The problem seems to be the front slip yolk being attached to the front uni which has non replaceable bearings.
If you have been through this what was the solution?
Conversions = unexpected costs. Pete

toyota have non-replaceable unis.
ive heard some celica guys having thier unis machined out and replaced with holden unis. but i dunno if u can do the same with MX83.
did they show why/how/where the unis are worn, or are they trying to get u to spend more money at their shop?

I ran into the same problem with my Supra tailshaft. Instead of looking for another worn-out second-hand Supra tailshaft, I decided to get a Hilux 2-piece tailshaft shortened to suit. Hilux tailshafts have replaceable uni's so I won't have this problem ever again.

Hmm, some are replaceable, ALL are not SERVICABLE.
I got all mine replaced, and the shaft rebalanced for $200.

Thanks heaps for the replies. All helpful.Love this Forum.,
rob RA40-yes,machining out has been mentioned but not by anyone that can quote it YET.definitely noted the wear for myself.240,000 on the car.
Danish.sorry,no pics.
Black Supra-definitely custom shaft time and its me thats getting shafted! By the time its lenghtened and uni's replaced there is no old shaft remaining.
Norbie.Hilux bits have been mentioned. They have the same spline? [stating the obvious]So I presume you purchased a S/H Hi Lux unit and resized it longer or shorter and replaced the uni's? Details? What shop, how much, what unis, how much for S/H shaft, what did u have for Brekky? This sounds like the solution.Cheers.Pete.

- Spline is the same as a W58... not sure what gearbox you're using?
- Yes I bought a second-hand Hilux tailshaft (don't know which model Hilux, I just grabbed one from a shelf at a wreckers) and had it shortened to suit my MA61. The uni's were OK so I left them but I replaced the centre bearing.
- The tailshaft cost me $88 and the mods/centre bearing cost $250.
- I got it done by Gibbs truck parts at the Gold Coast... they're the people to see about custom tailshafts.

$400 is a damn ripoff if you ask me
unis only cost $11 each and are easy to change
and a custom tailshaft is about $65 is you start with 1 end correct

Yeah, just a communication prob there,Cressi unis are not replaceable but Hilux are and are apparently quite similiar. I cant go one piece shaft as my exhaust is built around the shaft in normal position. My problem to date with organising a hilux shaft as a starting point is that the first question from the wrecker is "what year Hilux" whichg I dont know so have to rock up with the shaft and go from there. Thanks for your input guys.Pete.

Bit the bullet today and total rebuild of my shaft except using same centre bearing $385 from BDS brisbane driveline services. It needs to be about 75 longer [front shaft] and replaceable style uni mod.
These 2 piece shafts cost about 220 to balance.I went to the wreckers.1 wanted 200 for a used hilux shaft and the other 125.I had previously confirmed them both on the phone at 80 to 100 so I didnt want to do business with them after that.It also was not at all a simple exercise to work out which Hilux shaft to buy.Bolt patterns were not correct and centre bearings used different mounts.
I feel I took the safe route [guaranteed correct fit] although I had to pay for the convenience.
Thanks all for advice.Cheers.Pete.
