BOV on Turbo Diesel Thu, 21 October 2004 23:39 Go to next message
Just fitted an intercooler to my Navara ute and my mate jokingly said "When are you gonna fit a BOV". Got me thinking, wouldnt do anything on a diesel would it as there is no throttle butterfly? When you take your foot off the gas the engine would just swallow up that air wouldnt it? Razz

Correct.
Why don't trucks have blow off valves?? Consider that

Yep, there needs to be a pressure differential to make a BOV work... and with no butterfly there will be no differential!

I thought about rigging something up with the vacuum system for my brakes to make one work as a laugh.

It would involve an electronic controlled vacuum solenoid, T pieced into line from vacuum pump to brake booster, then to BOV from turbo compressor outlet.

When throttle is closed, switch opens solenoid which allows vacuum to hit BOV signal line which would open BOV.

Hadn't figured out how to get it to closed at idle though when throttle is closed.

I've obviously got too much time on my hands. Razz
Or you could do the rice version which plays the sounds for the NA boys Laughing Laughing

Well what about a truck with an exhaust brake then? Then again if the exhaust valves are closed shut the turbo would stop boosting, thats an interesting one! aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

What does an exhaust brake have to do with anything? BOV's are plumbed into the inlet, not the exhaust!

No shit sherlock!

I mean if the driver takes his foot off the accelerator the exhaust valves will be held shut, therefore wouldnt it have a similar effect as having a closed throttle plate?

Um... no. A diesel is never going to pull vacuum without a throttle plate.

Another thing - exhaust brakes sound 10 million times better than a blow off valve ever can Very Happy
