I can only echo - Why?
We never had any problems with the ~8700rpm 3K we used to use in the racer, with a stock chain drive. The valve gear was always the limiting factor.

Also, have you got a reverse-direction cam in there? It won't start otherwise.

Wish mine had one of those, then it might sound SLIGHTLY less like a diesel... especially on startup... hang on, maybe I could shout it an oil change one day.... hmmmm, naaaaahhhh... ($7 worth of Home Brand oil is borderline high maitenance cost for that car!)

hey bill you sure on the reverse direction cam bit? if the crank pulley drives clockwise, it would drive that intermediate gear anti clockwise, which in turn would drive the cam gear clockwise.
or have i taken too many stupid pills this morning?

TRD used to sell upright kits for the race k series motor which removed the lean from the motor and required a new bellhousing as well (I think). Not sure of the advantages of this setup but there had to be a reason.

From memory, it's to help the oil return from the head. I think that the drains are on the camshaft side, and so leaning the engine that way helps the oil fall back into the sump.

Bill remembers right, drains are on the camshaft side.
I've heard a different reason for tilting K-series engines in smaller Toyotas for racing. There will be no enough clearance to bolt on sidedraught twin carbs. I managed to run into one pic of such enginebay - it was evident that those carbies really needed that inch or two to fit there. Engine was upright and there seemed to be like 1,5cm clearance from velocity trumpet to inner fender.
