7M Starter Motor Troubles - Anybody?

I think the starter motor on my 7M (92 Cressida Grande) has unfortunately had the dick.. all i get when i turn the key is a click.. no whirring and the engine isn't turning over at all.. if the engine kicks over at all, it'll start without any problem..
i put a jump starter on it the other day to no avail.. as yet i havent NOT been able to start it, it just takes about 50 clicks and then it will start perfectly in one go..
so.. my diagnosis would be that the throwout (solenoid) IS working and:
a) the gear on the end of the throwout is hitting the face of the flywheel
possibly in conjunction with
b) the electric motor in the starter has had the dick and its just not spinning the starter gear even if it does engage with the flywheel
are the 2 gears (starter motor & flywheel) synchromesh?
my theories are most likely incorrect and i am hoping for a little enlightenment hahah
has anyone experienced anything similar?
Cheers

It will probably be the contacts in the soleniod.

Yep-starter solenoid contacts. I'd be 100% positive of that. If you can pull the starter out and dismantle the solenoid (the smaller of the two cylindrical parts of the starter),you'll find that one of the contacts is worn away more than the other. There are two options-either file the other one down the same amount or go to an auto electtician and get some new ones (about $5-$10).
Don't fret, it's nothing serious and is cheap to fix. (I've re-built the solenoid on these starers multiple times-it's really easy)

My starter was doing the same thing so I put new contacts in it but it still happened, so what I did was hooked up a relay to the solenoid. The relay is switched on by the original solenoid wire, earthed to the block and positive power straight from the starter motor power wire. This means more power goes to the solenoid coil which pulls it in and makes it connect better. I have never had a problem since.
If you need a diagram of this setup PM me with your email and I will send you a layout

Ah yes-I've also put relays on all the starter setups I've fixed as well. It's also a common fix on fords and anything else that doesn't have a decent starter circuit.
10-15 buck investment and it'll never bother you again.

Would be the contacts inside the starter... Go to an auto electrician and buy the contacts and plunger from there or get them to do it for you... But it will need contacts and a plunger definately.

My car was doing similar things, make sure all the wiring connections are clean, and the battery terminals are clean too.
My cressys just ticked over 304,000 and still starting no problem, with original plunger and contacts, it was stripped at 295,000 and regreased, bit of emry on the contacts, never been a problem since.

How do you know it has the original contacts and plunger inside ? They do last fairly well . Depends how often its started , km's are only a rough indication as it could be used for long drives etc.
