hey, i still don't have a toyota yet

i have been checking out all sorts of toyotas

whaddya reckon?

old skool or mid eighties car?

i have been thinking of a AE82 twin cam rolla seca or a '86-88 model celica....

or go old skool... back to my roots
KE series rolla? or go an celica?

i need something that is practical, something which i can chuck my bikes in... relatively economical but a bit of fun...

had a sprinter... i liked it but i prefer 4 doors actually

Well I think if you want to carry around bikes you can cut down your list a little! I mean you can forget about the Celica idea Rolling Eyes

The AE92 Does carry A bike inside it.

I'm not sure about the AE82 as I have not witnessed or partaken in doing so.

Mk2 Supra's can be had for around $4k. They're lots of fun and they have a nice big cargo area with the back seats folded down... I can get my mountain bike in there easily. It may not fulfill your "economical" criteria very well, but it's worth considering anyway. Smile

The AE82 will fit in a full size mountain bike, just don't expect to squeeze much else in with it.

oh yeah, i'm talking about a mountain bike (push bike)

... i thought the seca would be big enough

i dunno, i suppose i have always wanted a twiny AE82... since my ride in a modified one back in '92. i like the shape, the economy and racy little 4age. i also know of people clocking up big mileage without too much prob... over 300,000Kms

i do like the hatch shape more.. over the seca shape but the seca is more practical. hey, can you fit a bike in with the front wheel on or off?

Hey are there any problem things to look out for with the AE82 Seca twin cam.

the supra mk2 sounds nice too but lack the practicality. i heard the 2.8 is pretty heavy on juice. nice lookin' car though. does it go that hard standard or do you need to shove a 1J turbo into it?

any other suggestions?

i will finally show my face and join the club once i get a toyota.

i had an excel, then sold it, and following pressure from the wife, i got a brand new golf.

unfortunately, the golf just doesn't hit the spot. Sad

i do drive a toyota everyday, it is the work car. unfortunately, it is a dark blue camry conquest '98... it goes pretty hard but is way too common.

We got my mates mountain bike in my AE82 Hatch easy with the front wheel off (didn't have time to try other wise).
You could always get a set of those quick unlock wheel nut things if you don't already have some.

The twinky's are pretty good on fuel.

I'm not sure if its true but i have been told that the seca's have prob with the extra large hatch and the weight. Someone told me that his mates one broke off.

Why worry about fitting a bike in?
Why not just spend ~$100 of that $4k on a bike rack?
There are some really cool ones around now that can be fitted in under 2mins.
Also good cos you wont have to bother cleaning all the mud and crap off the bike before you put it in the car.

yikes! broke off Sad

re: front wheel, i do have a quick release on it but i have v-brakes which mean i can take it off but it is a hassle.

also, how much heavier do ya reckon a seca is compared to a hatch?

also, how many ae82s ya reckon already have the later model 100kw engine....

it is a no brainer transplant right

also, ya reckon the 20v transplant is pretty straight forward?

I think Im alone on this one.

Celica, ST162, Gen2 if possible.

Comfortable, handles awesome, think it outhandles and outguns a 'Rolla, and there are hundreds to be had for sub $4000.

Speaking of only the SX, a 103kw, 174nm 3S-GE that sits purdy below 4 grand, and hauls arse past it.

In terms of space, if you fold down the back seats its got as much room as any car, and even without folding theres plenty.

Thoughts anyone?

Yep, sounds like a good choice Smile If you don't mind engine parts being a bit of a pain, something different could be a Celica XX like my project car. Loves to rev, handles nicely, lots of potential. Plus you could get a nice one for that price...if you can find one Smile

mmmmmmmm...... i have consider the first front drive celica

nice car... would it actually be much quicker than a ae82 twin cam rolla?

i do like celicas but i am concerned about the rarity of parts. isn't the 3SGE only slightly more powerful than a 3SFE which in essence is a camry engine?

how are parts for this model?

and, looking further down the track, is a 3SGTE a straight bolt in?

Should be noticeable quicker than a twin cam Rolla, and is just quicker than my cousins import 'rolla, which has a 100kw red top 4AGE. Outhandles both easily. The advantage of .4L also helps down low.

I dont understand how the parts are rare? These cars are pretty common. I havent had a problem at all.

The ST162 SX has a 3SGE which has about 103kw, the ST variant has a 3SFE (camry) which has 88kw. It also has larger mags, more electrics, better interior etc. Quite abit faster.

In terms of a 3SGTE swap, Ive done a little research, and a few people have done and detailed it. However, from my own point of view, such a young driver and insurance, I found it better to improve airflow in the current engine, wait till it dies or a convenient time, then whack in a later Gen 3SGE, with about 128kw. That would give it a large jump, and means the conversion is alot cheaper.

Jimothy

Mad Stop thinking about it and get an ST162 Celica (88mdl if you can find a nice one for 4k)

I can verify the performance, handling and ease of camping or carrying surfboards and bikes. It can easily be modernised and by simply doing the intake and full exhaust (manifold a must) you will get an great bang for buck with style, performance and most importantly for me...practicality.

first mod should suspension and brakes like any first car mod should be.

Another great feature of the Celica is the nice rack ratio of the steering. Something I REALLY miss when I (used Sad ) to rally my GT4's

As far as doing a 3SGTE conversion well that's a piece of piss. I sold mine ST162/3SGTE to my cousin who has since pumped it to a nice 186kw at the wheels and he has since done 2 more conversions. The last one took 4days with full EMS setup. I'm sure he would be quite willing to do it for you at a very Toymods price. That goes for anyone who wants it done.

Man, think practical. Are you gonna insure it? A Celica may be pretty hefty on insurance if you're a youngin' driver like me.
Personally, I'd get an AE92 (okay maybe being a bit biased seeing as I have one). A 4A-GE if you can. They're fun, heaps of accessories for the engine/chassis, nice looking and very economical. More space I'd say than an AE82. I'm sold!!

That is a ST162

Which comes in two flavours,
First Gen, which doesnt have the front grill the whole way accross, which is in the picture,
and the second gen which does have the grill under the popups.

Within either Gen, same code, comes an ST or an SX
ST has the 3S-FE (booooo!)
SX has the 3S-GE (horrrah!)

The turbo 4WD version is an altogether (and more fun) story.

I bought an AE82 mainly coz i wanted something cheap to chuck my mountain bike in and I wanted a small car with more poke than a normal hatch (hence getting the Twin Cam). If you have a good mtb I would not be keen on putting it on a bike rack (much more easily stolen if you need to leave the car alone). Also you have the hassle of putting the bike rack on and off and if you live in a shoebox like mine there's nowhere to store the bike rack when you're not using it.

Needless to say - very happy with the Twinky purchase...

Surprised

was diggin' thru some old threads and found one i started earlier..

i now have a toyota!!!! a twinky in fact!!!! and ended getting one for $1100 Shocked

at the end of the day... i preferred the practicality of 4 doors/seca over a celica or a hatch.... Rolling Eyes & yeah, i know hatches look better

thus far, i have had alot of fun and frustration with working on an old car again. i haven't done this for a long time. I have been happy with the car... probs with the car initially included slight front and rear damage, sun damaged paintwork, worn tyres, rattly interior, hadn't been serviced for 50,000kays.. blah, blah but the only thing i need for rego was new tyres.

What made me really happy was after a drive of another twinky. I drove a mate's twinky which had same mileage but better condition in general, selling for $3500 with 9 month rego. My one was so much more powerful and smoother than this other twinky.. dunno why though... cause this one had a full exhaust system and filter

money spent (approx):

purchase price: $1100
rego: $200
green slip: $500
pink slip: $20
3rd party property: $300
new tyres: $400
timing belt: $110 and $100 labour (with me helping)
oil, petrol filter, degreaser, oil filter: $?
new set of Boston 4inch 2 ways: $110
miscellaneous screws to make the interior rattle free

my cousin is now looking for a toyota also... they are planning to spend $5K but now in two minds about it.... i have been trying to comvince him to get an old skool celica (which he also thinks are avery cool)

anyway, just thought i would share about my new purchase since people were good enuff to reply to my question earlier... thanks for all the advice guys!!!

sweathers the st162 is the 4th gen celica not 2nd gen
i have a st162 4th gen celica (87) goes awesome , insurance was really cheap!! im only 19, its only a 3 door but the back seats fold down,( thats if you dont wanna put subs in the boot)
i would so recommend a 4th gen celica(86-89) i got mine for 3 grand in excellent condition!

For a different spin on the st162 celica there is also the coupe model rather than the hatch. Personally I like the lines of these better, but there may be some bias there.

Heres some photos of my old one:

http://www.users.bigpond.com/simon.lawrence/oldrid es.html

(note this was after I raised it again, just before selling. looked much better when it was lowered)
