by the look of them you have to use the dowel and actually remove them from the cam to adjust. not a good idea to adjust yourself if you dont really know how too.
if adjusted wrong or moving the cam belt, you can basically screw your engine up. the valves could hit the piston and boom, there goes a 4ag

hehehehhe, u have to remove the pin and slightly move the cam slightly, i mean very slightly, for u see the holes in the cam and gears are slightly offset from each other,
never will 2 holes line up at the same time, it will look close but just slightly off, then when the next set of holes it lined up just put the pin in, tightne the bolts ect, and remove the spark plugs and turn the engine by hand, if it gets difficult to move or just stops, then the valves are hitting the pistons, the reason u remove the plugs is so u dont mistake the compression stroke for valve interference.
understand

its called "vernier" adjustment, you take out the dowell pin, adjust the position where you want it, then put the pin back in the hole where the hole lines up, it could be any hole!

incorrect, the 4age is a non interferance motor

The 4AGE was designed well to allow for timing belt snappage and noobs that like to fiddle with things that they dont know about

Dude, read Mr DOHC's post, that's how you adjust them. What you should adjust them to is a completely different story though.
Anyone got any good links on optimum cam timing for a 4AGE? It's obviously going to change depending on engine mods, but what are the basic principles? More overlap means worse idle, but better fill at high RPM? Someone enlighten us

Babow.. Most 4AGEs are non-interferance. I have just managed to create one which isnt.

so what u saying is that u retart or advance the timing (meaning cam shaft)
then u spin the gear to tell u find a spot where the dowel fits back in
