er..you want to replace an engine with a gearbox?
the w58 will hold up fine behind a 1j as has been proven many times. just as long as you dont abuse it.

Just use some nice oil, and don't miss gears, you'll be fine.
My W57 has copped 1uz power and torque for 3 months, including a lot of abuse.
I don't think it will break anytime soon.
For the cost of a replacement, I wouldn't be worried about breaking anything.

It also copped it for 18months (or so)
And only failed on a 3rd gear flat change.

The W57 didn't last anywhere near as long though... and I was treating it gently!
I'd be a bit concerned about a W57 in a heavy car like an MX83 though... but then again they're cheap to replace if you mash it.

how is a w57 so much weaker to a w58 if you are stripping gearsets?

Alloy sandwich plate = more flex = gears out of alignment = stripped gearsets. That's my theory anyway - I don't know exactly why it broke, but I know it did break and in a much shorter period!

It couldn't have just been the fact the W57 was much older than your W58 and had a harder longer life? That seems a lot more feasible than a alloy sandwich plate flexing enough to misalign the gears.

Yes the W57 was older, but it had lived behind a 21R-C before I bought it... how hard a life could it have had?
The sandwich plate holds the entire gearset together, so flexing is definitely going to cause issues... and I think it goes without saying that an alloy plate will be significantly weaker than a steel plate with the same dimensions.

Dude, regardless of what is was behind, thing of the km's, and the general neglect, stupidity and everything. I'd still say the sandwich plate flexing isn't likely to be the main cause.

Neglect and stupidity would explain dud bearings or shot synchros, but mashed gearsets? How?
