cant get my sump off!! Mon, 25 October 2004 13:33 Go to next message
Ive been have a fun day changeing my gearbox on my hilux(rwd 1990). I decided to put a new seal on the sump as it leaks a bit but I cant get the dammn thing off!!!

also the spigot berings stuck too but I saw a thread on that already.

Ive got all the sump bolts out its just wedged in there buy all the other stuff around it. I cant seem to get the bottom crossmember thing of no matter how hard I try. I get the feeling that if I could get it off the sump would just drop to the ground.

Any sugestions???

thanks

I don't really know your engine but is it a two piece sump. Like the top piece goes for the whole length of the engine and then there is the small bit underneath that? are you trying to get the whole thing off or just the little section?

they usually have some sort of silicone type stuff holding them on. I had to pry mine off with a screwdriver but if the problem is that there is too much stuff in the way then I have no answers sorry except move the stuff Smile

Screwdrivers can damage the sump with their levering - be careful. I prefer a paint scraper and a hammer, tapping the scraper around the seal until it releases.

You could try and jack the motor up to get the sump off

A soft faced hammer (like a rubber mallet) can help as well. Once the seal is broken.

Helpful information would have been what engine, what car etc.

nevertheless, if your sump is sealed up with the "sump goo" (as i like to call it), which is a thick rubberly silicon type sealant, then you will need to crack that seal.

To do that, i usually apply a few gentle taps with a rubber mallet in different places to loosen up the sealant, failing that i use something flat and relatively wide to gently pry the sump off (usually a prybar).

Get yourself a tube of the sealant stuff from toyota, its GOOOD Smile
