Timing Belt - 4AGE Smallport

Hey guys,
I snapped the timing belt in my rolla last night, just a quick question, i've been told its very likey that i have bent / snapped the valves.
Just wondering if anyone has snapped the timing belt in a 4AGE before and how common it is to bend or snap valves.
Also what sort of process you went through to fix the problem.
I was told i should get the valves reseated and head machined while its off.
Can someone just give me a insight of the process of replacing belt and fixing valves / head if needed.

Most 4AGEs are non-interference unless it has been modified fairly heavily.

Yeah like Takai said.. it is unlikely you have bent any valves.
Just get a new belt, line up all the timing marks and away you go.

Thanks for your replys..
So most 4AGEs are non interference? thats means its unlikey i did any damage to the engine with the belt snapped?
Cool.. i hope you guys are right..
Anything else i should get done when putting the belt on?
Cheers

You probably would have heard some great sounds if you actually did some damage

Yeah, if it wasn't/isn't a non-interference engine the valve would have slammed into the piston. This bends the valve, and also smashes a nice hole in the top of your piston. Also make a very bad sound (not that I would know, I've only seen the aftermath, but I've been told).
So if you have bent your valves (and you probably haven't due to yeah, non-interference engine) it would probably be full engine rebuild / replacement time.

Ok, i replaced the timing belt, and still won't start. i have no idea.
Did a compression test and it was very low on all cylinders, 80 80 90 100....
I'm thinking i did bent / snap the valves, otherwise what would cause these low compressions?
I have checked everything, please help.. ASAP!!!

i have a problem too. i changed my cams, put the cam gears and belt in to exact location (marked gears and belt b4 removing).
After cranking engine one cycle by hand, the marks dont meet. Probably due to belt tension change. How do i overcome this problem??
bourny, u sure u didnt put cam gears up side down?? Maybe u have same problem as me.

Just keep retensioning the belt, it may be out by like one tooth. Also its two cycles of the crank to line it up.

timing - cam/s and or ignition.
the compression is not too low to be able to run, and is too high & consistant for bent valves.

Thanks guys, ill check the timing again also the cams at TDC...
what would cause the low compression? bottom end wearing out?
Ill check these things today and ill let you guys know what happens...
i ready to get rid of this car, i just want something more reliable but i don't have the money to buy one yet...
Cheers guys.

If you think you have bent valves, check your valve clearances, they will be way out of spec if they are.
4a's are non-interference though, so you shouldn't have a problem. Just line up all you cams and make sure after 2 crankshaft revs it's all still lined up.

also, make sure you have your cam timing set in reference to TDC COMPRESSION stroke....
On the stock cams, there is actually a little notch up the front of the shaft which denotes TDC compression, have these notches on both cams pointing straight up, and then put on the cam gears so that the notches on the cam gears line up with the lines on the timing cover back plate.
Now line up the crankshaft to TDC, there are notches on both the timing gear drive and the crank pullet.
Install belt, and make sure you have enough tension that after a few revolutions (i do about 6) everything is still lined up at TDC compression.
Easy peasy. I dont understand why people get confused doing this....
