Surge tank info? Wed, 27 October 2004 06:18 Go to next message
Just wanted to see what kind of info was available for surge tanks, ie. how they're used, what applications, etc. I was thinking of using one, but I don't really have anywhere to put it except in my cargo area. I don't have rear seats so that makes for a LOT of cargo area. Most people I've seen put one in their boot area as it's close to the fuel tank. Mine is right under where the left-rear passenger seat WOULD be, but I don't know if I'd get it passed for engineering.

Anyone have any info on these?

Thanks in advance. Wink

surge tanks are mainly used as far as i know so that the motor doesnt lean out when the petrol tank is under 1/4 full.

they are usually put in either the boot, the engine bay or internal surge tanks (in petrol tank)

your best bet would probably be to get an internal one made. i dont think that you would get passed if in cargo bay as it is open into the compartment and if there are any leaks/explosions/etc then very hazardous.

the most common method for external ones near the tank is that they are filled from the top of the surge by a lift pump (small low pressure pump as small distance to travel) and then normal/high pressure pump feeds it to engine from bottom of tank.

if its in the engine bay then normal/high pressure pump to top of surge and lift pump to motor.

if you have an internal one then all is required is a normal/high pressure pump to motor as surge is filled within tank automatically.

with the return you can either have it go to the petrol tank or back to the surge. i believe if it goes back to surge it is a little better as less pumping/work required by lift pump.

hope this helps you.... also as for getting them made do a search in the sales sections as a few people on the forums make them if memory serves me right...

Its only a guess but I would have thought a Rav4 would already have a efi style tank with baffling or internal swirl pot?

Cheers

You won't get past engineering with a surge tank in the cabin.
Just chuck it in your engine bay!
A surge tank minimises the chance of your engine running lean due to restrictions in your fuel system.
