I have discovered that an ordinary valve spring compressor isn't up to the task of removing the 3S-GE valves (as you need to be able to access the top of the valve) where can I find a tool to be able to do this, or should I just find an old socket and cut it in half and stick it on top of the valve and use the crappy compressor?

It's not pretty but it works - Pack a rag tightly into the combustion chamber with the head sitting on a flat solid surface. Get something like a 20mm socket.
Put the socket over the valve spring retainer and give it a good smack with a hammer.
The collets will pop out, releasing the retainer.

Toby Hunt from http://www.m-msport.com.au sells an excellent gadget to do that with.
No spring compressors, just a little tool that you hold in your hand.
