What motor was it originally set up for? Can it be put on anything, or is it like Microtechs that are configured for a particular engine?

It was in my previous car, a 1997 Holden Rodeo with the 2.6 litre sohc 4 cylinder engine which I had turbocharged.
I don't see how it can be setup for one car and then that's the only car it can ever run, it's a fully reprogrammable ecu.
There's an extra sensor that comes with the loom which is the air inlet temp probe, the rest of the loom just wires into the factory sensors and injectors.
With the Rodeo I had to use a Nissan FJ-20DET distributor disk and Nissan CA-18DET throttle position sensor. Toyota's most likely won't need these but they come with the Autronic as I don't have any use for them now.

Just a free plug, I run an autronic and might be biased but reckon it's the best ECU i've used.
