old M-TEU engines Thu, 28 October 2004 03:06 Go to next message
i have an old M-TEU engine with broken piston, wrecked bearings and scratched crank shaft.
i found a guy with another old M-TEU he doesn't want and can't remember if it was fully running when he pulled it out. if i get these old pieces of junk together is it possible to make one good running engine?
am i clasping at straws or is this possible?
Could i just take both to a real mechanic and get 'em to slap together something that runs??

You certainly can slap bits together and make one.
But best bet is to buy one that actually ran. Which reminds me....I better find how much it costs to send one to Brisbane?

Best thing to do with these motors is to take off the turbo manifold oil lines and sump... Goto a wreckers and buy yourself a 5me and stick all the turbo gear onto it...

THe MTEU manifold will allow you to stick any T3 style turbo onto the 5M and you have the bonus of 2.8 litres instead of just 2.... You can run the turbo off a VL Commodore...

I did a similar conversion about 5yrs ago and managed around 210hp at the wheels

yeah, the GT has a 5m with MTEU bits bolted on too, i reckon it would pump out around that much hp aswell.....but, he doesn't wanna sell me that particular engine and has a running MTEU, so i'm planning on putting that in, but was just wondering if it might be cheaper or easier to try and rebuild mine with parts from willbo's MTEU.
how much do you reckon a rebuild would cost if i took to a mechanic both MTEU's? if its still in excess of $1,500 i would rather just buy dave's engine.
i thought that if i pulled both engines out and just took them to a mechanic and got him to chop and change the parts around and rebuild a working engine would cost less than a rebuild for an engine he doesn't have parts for.

i'm still willing to buy that 5M MTEU of yours dave if it's still just lying around???? Wink

thanks guys.

for $1500 you could probably get a 5me in good condition and get a mechanic to put the mteu stuff on for you...

It really isnt worth rebuilding the mteu for the same price you can get a 5me with all the mteu stuff on it...

This is the 5M(T)E I have for 1500.... I doubt you'd get a reconditioned, balanced, blueprinted 5ME for under $2000.

Cool I didnt realise that the motor that was being sold had the 5m bottom end or that it had been reconditioned... This seems like the go. Is that the standard turbo on there???

ummm, from what i've been told its a Reconditioned T03 turbo, i dunno if that is stock with MTEU?

Dave, what's going on? have you found anyone in melbourne that's gonna buy it?
cause from all that i've found, your 5m is by the far the cheapest option and will obviously give me the best performance/power i can get out of an old M series car without a conversion.
i know shipping it to brisbane is gonna be a hastle and expensive, but i'm still really keen.
but it's up to you, that other old MTEU u have will do, its just i dunno if its gonna be worth shipping up an old engine....but atleast yours work!

thanks for ur advice fellas.
