7M-GTE - Head gasket problems, need the facts Thu, 28 October 2004 05:14 Go to next message
Hey guys, im new to these forums so go easy on me Very Happy .. i've already done a search on this and havent really found the answers im looking for ..

Is the Head Gasket on the 7M-GTE Really that prone to blowing? everywhere i read about the old supra's and soarers (which im going to purchase for my next car) i get told over and over that this is the case .. It has lead me to not even wanting to go down that path , instead im thinking i should go for the diff version equipped with the 1G-GTE just so i have less problems down the track. I have also heard that getting a metal head gasket and setting the tension?(i think) tighter solves this problem?

I just want to know how common the fault is and how many people on here have experienced and if its really worth avoiding if you dont want to spend big $$$ , Your imput is appreciated

Thanks,
Endless

Yes, its very prone, infact, inevitable.

The HG wasnt torqued down enough from factory.

But when it blows, you fix it ONCE, and you fix it RIGHT, and it should never happen under normal circumstances again.

hmmm , my second question - is it worth getting the 7M-GTE over the 1G-GTE just due to the ~25kw difference? i would definately be modifying the car quite a bit , and mabey even do a single turbo conversion on the 1G if i were to get it .. does the .5 litre less capacity really make that much of a difference between the 2 engines?

I don't own a 7mgte... ($yet Embarassed $ )

But from what i gather, some people re-torque the head to prevent the problem for a little longer. Then when it goes - Metal head gasket and ARP head studs have been said to fix the problem.

Go M Power! Very Happy

Cheers

The 7M is also a fantastic torque monster.

Just remember, it may only be 25kw or so difference between the two on paper, but you can bet the 7M will have a better power curve, and deliver a lot more torque.

Bias? What's that.

7M's forever.

They always say that cubes count

You feel tourque.

Fix it and fix it once. Is a bit of a job to strip and do yourself. nothing a long day wouldn't fix.
