hey guys i own a st162 3sge and i have been having some big probs with it last week it wouldnt start one morning so i had it towed and the mechanic replaced the ignition coil and told me to put a new dizzy cap and rotor on it and spark plugs and leads so i have done this and its still not starting, its very weird as it starts sometimes and other times it wont ?? i think it might be the battery but i have the battery hooked up to a starter kit and its still not starting and i dont think its getting a spark ?? im very confused as i have done everything they told me to do and they replaced the ignition coil last week and its still not starting 80% of the time,
any help on this would be very helpful

Sounds very similar to a problem i was having but with a st183 gen 2 3sge I did all the same things you did and more yet still had the problem it ended up being the fuel pump, was so pissed off when it was something so simple change.

spark's pretty easy to test for:
remove one lead, have someone crank engine, look for spark
do some basic fuel tests:
remove cold-start injector - did fuel spray everywhere when you loosened the banjo bolt?
connect a fuel pressure guage in it's place, does it get up to pressure when ign turned on? or when cranking?
work out how to extract diagnotic codes from ECU and see if ECU has a problem somewhere?

Dude,
Are you in the NRMA ?
They should be able to tell you what the problem is. Once you've joined it won't cost you anything.
Cheers

yer or this...
the starter motor/ring gear... gets stuck in the fly wheel... and stops the engine from kickin over.. i had that problem and also the starter motor relay.. was a problem i had aswell.. try takin the hand brake off holdin the key on start and puttin it in gear with the clutch out and just rock it with ur foot so it locks into gears back and forth it should turn over if its the starter motor if not no idea

Yeah, i'm agreed, i had probs with my starter moter, and found the power had pulled out the back of it, WTF?, so it would work half the time. Aside from that, got and alarm or immobilizer installed?
Battery terminal, yeah thats a common problem, just pull off your clamp and clean it with a wire brush.
good luck

There are two parts that make an engine start spark and fuel if you cant start the car then its one of those two things.
Check all your earths in particular the earth lead from the wiring loom to the block.
Also check to see if the engine is turning over if it isnt there is something wrong with your starter motor.
If it is turning over and you have spark then turn your ignition key to accessories and listen for the fuel pump whirling if you cant hear anything then it could be your fuel pump.
If you cant find it after all that buy a new motor
