Celica ST185 GT4 - Fuel Sender Issues Sat, 30 October 2004 02:28 Go to next message
Hi Guys,

I'm having some issues with my fuel guage (it never goes below half way, works fine for the first half of the tank). I had a look at the fuel sender, can anyone confirm if this is the same fuel that the ST184 Celica? This is from a ST185 GT4 (see pics below).

Another thing I noticed is the the fuel guage always gives me a reading, even when there is no ignition. Is this normal? I ruled out the possiblity of a 'stuck' fuel guage; as soon as I disconnect the fuel sender, its lowers the EMPTY.

Thanks.

Can't help with the first question sorry, but my ST185 fuel guage works with the ignition off, wasn't used to it coming from my corolla...hmm the corolla's guage hardly works at all anyway!

Well that explains why it only work to half way?

Will a ST184 sender do? Can't imagine finding a ST185 around Canberra wreckers too easily.

Its a stasis fuel guage in all Toyota's from the early 90's, so it gives you a constant fuel reading at all times regardless of where the key is.
Yep - twin floats on the sender arm mate, I hope the other one is not at the bottom of your tank right now ! The second float gives the arm enough weight to read through the bottom half of your tank.
Call a Toyota dealer and ask for the part numbers for a ST182/4 unit and a 185 unit, if the part numbers are the same (and most likely they are), you are laughing.
Mitch.

MY st185 sender only had one float as well, but it worked fine.

The only problem i have with my fuel status, is that the fuel light doesn't come on any more.

Well if yours works............. Confused

Strange. So you boys are positive it's supposed to have 2 floats?

If I'm supposed to have 2, then the other is floating around somewhere, as the above pics show all I saw when I pulled it out Shocked

The EPC picture of the fuel sender only shows one float as well....

So i dunno, possibly a bunged sender?

Grab a multimeter and check the resistience when you move it around.
