RA28 fuel tank Sun, 31 October 2004 21:30 Go to next message
Couple of things,

I have two small holes in the top of the tank. What's best to seal them with? I have some urethane I was thinking of using, should resist fuel ok and should last a while.

secondly, what the hell is that little plastic bit for and so I need it? I have EFI with surgetank and external pumps etc. To me it looks like some sort of vapour thing???

thanks guys

Are you talking about the plastic tube thing with 4 pipes going into it?

I'm also curious as to what this is for.

Cheers
Joel

yeah that's the one. Maybe if we clock up enough posts someone will answer. I did a search but couldn't find anything usefull. I assume that the loose hose on mine (has about 4" of steel tube coming from it) must have gone to the carbon canister originally. Maybe that plastic thing just traps the fuel so it doesn't travel up the line and come out the carbon canister?

I wondered this too, I think it's to do with the carbon canister, thats what I hooked mine up to, pretty straight forward

Hmm i'm a bit confused about what you are trying to find out.

There is 4 pipes right near the main filler outlet on the tank, these 4 pipes go to a large plastic thing that sits inside the rear 1/4 panel.

Then on top of the tank you have 3 pipes, 1 is to engine, 1 is return, and the other is charcole canister.

Thats my understanding anyway.

Cheers

The charcole canister is in the engine bay, its a cylinder type thing with a vacuum line in the top and a fuel line going into it also.

The plastic thing with 4 pipes going into it in the 1/4 panel is something else.

I only have a RA23 and there is no plastic associated with any part of this tank, bar the fuel level float on the side. The four pipes on the top are as follows:

The longest one is the fuel pick up (6mm)
The second longest is the fuel return (6mm)
The short 12mm pipe is the vent tube that hooks up
to the filler neck from the fuel cap. It helps to
burp the tank of air while you are filling up.
The short 4mm pipe hooks up to the carbon canister.

My carbon canister is down near the original battery and it made of metal. Does the RA28 have a plastic one located in the rear?

Mitch.

yeh if u notice the tank itself needs somewhere to dissipate the fumes (just checked the manual to ake sure lol its the fuel evaporator) so yeh its just another charcoal canister

yes it has one in the rear 1/4 nest to the filler neck

Mitch, yeah the 28 tank has 4x 8mm or so pipes next to the breather / filler neck. They all go into this flat kinda plastic thing that sits up inside the rear 1/4 panel behind the trim.

There is a product sold at good 4WD shops and commonly known as 'gorilla snot' that is used to repair fuel tanks when they get a hole in them during serious off road driving. Use that stuff, just don't have any petrol in contact with it while it is drying.

I read those posts above again and like Freak says, it sounds like a secondary canister, a breather tank for the fuel tank. Vapour consensor or something. It won't hurt to have it connected still while you now have an external high pressure pump. Its a std factory part so unless you need the space where it sits and you really want to plug up those extra hole(s) it hooks up too, I would leave it in place.

I'm not sure what it does, but it's part of the emissions system, works with the charcole canister...

I heard once that the more learned engineers may not certify the car if they reslise it's missing, but I'd say chances of that happenning would be remote at best...

while filling up the 28, if you get to the first "click", pause a second and you can hear a heap of gurgling from that area (top of tank/plastic thing), after a few seconds the tank will take a heap more fuel. maybe my air exit pipe is blocked or something but it's been the same on both 28's i've had - i blame the plastic thingy Laughing maybe a slow release for air???
