I don't want to have to buy a new gearbox as i like my gearbox and have one as a spare.
I was wondering if there was a bellhousing i could to go between the 1GGTE and my w55 gearbox ?
if not can i get one custom made ?

A G-series bellhousing will bolt straight up to your W55. That said, finding one without a gearbox attached might be a PITA.

I'm getting everything i need on a palatte instead of buying a 1/2 cut.
So i'll just ask him to chuck a bellhousing on it

well i know where i can get a 1G bellhousing for a W57 cheap, and U pull it at lonsdale has about 15 RA60's one of them is bound to have a decent W57 in one of them, which is good becuase gearboxes are only $72
Is the clutch motor specific or gearbox specific?

Any of the W55,W57 and W58 boxes should be fine behind a 1GGTE.

which bellhousing do i need?
i have a spare 1G bellhousing off an auto, but it is unlikely that would fit would it?
also frank if i go to u pull it and grab a gearbox is it worth getting the clutch as well? or things like the master cylinder off the RA60?
What should i really be getting as it is dead set cheap at Upullit?

You need a G-W5X bellhousing. You may as well find something fron an importers or putting wanted notices on Toymods, cos you'll need a 1G clutch and flywheel as well. Even if you get everything bar the gearbox from the importers and pick up one of these W57's.

well id probably get a heavy duty clutch (brand spankers), flywheel is easy, clutch pedal comes straight out of an MA70 (i think/hope), can i use any master cylinder? for a W5X?

W55, 57 and 58 gearboxes are rated at 200 - 250 flywheel horsepower, so they will be fine behind a std 1G-GTE.
You will find W57's in RA60's, W55's in SA63's and (low strength) W58's in RA65's.
I'm running the W57 from a RA60 behind my 1G-GZE in my RA23.
You will need a G series bellhousing, and in mine at least, a "G" was stamped on it at the gearbox end if memory serves.
Ask the seller to tell you the stamping on the bellhousing before he chucks it on the pallet. Otherwise you will get an R series bellhousing and that does not mate up to the 1G series engines.
Going rate for a G series bellhousing is $100 and upwards as they are a rare beast.
Good luck with it all.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Your master cylinder choice will depend on your brakes, upgraded or not, more than what g/box you have. On std brakes a 15/16 MC is fine, just ensure that if you swap another MC onto your std vaccum booster that the rod inside the booster pushes the piston inside the MC the full length on its travel.
Been there, done that
And another thing, while the g/box is on the garage floor, buy and fit a new slave cylinder onto it. They are about $33 from Repco, cheap insurance against later hassles.
Mitch.

And now that I read your post again I see you mean clutch MC, DOH ! Yes, the std clutch mc is fine, just change the slave cyl like I posted.

It may last fine, just look after it and remember, there is a difference between driving hard and doing something to break it...i.e. flatshifting is a stupid idea.

not only is it stupid but it is pointless...
if you need to flatshift to win a drag then your car isnt fast enough

Torque kills gearboxes more than outright power. Drifting kills drivetrains. W57 g/boxes should be pretty cheap were you are. If you are worried about breaking one, by a second one to fit when and if you break the first one. Swap it in when it does, and then drive like Elmer Fudd while you get your first g/box rebuilt with heavy duty internals.
If you never break the first box, sell your spare one.
Mitch.

yeah RA23 i was thinking of just buying two of them when i go to get the first one, they are only 80 odd dollars each so its not as if its going to break the bank which is handy and once the hard work is done, i.e. finding bell housing, getting clutch modified, modifying tailshaft, fitting clutch pedal and master cylinder, fitting another gearbox should only be one days work at most
Cheers for the help people and sorry for hijacking this thread, whomever it belonged too

well as previously stated just don't drive it so hard.. don't intentionally try to break your gearbox W57 is tough as nails but anything is possible!! i would surgest putting a G'box from a hyundai Excel they are awesome or a Kia Rio

On this topic, how hard is it to find a suitable clutch relaease fork for the g series bellhousing? I'm buying a bare bellhousing, so i take it i will need to find;
clutch release fork
throwout bearing
slave cylinder
Is that it? Where can I get these off, any common donors?

For what it's worth, I have a W55 behind my 1G-GTE... it handles it pretty easily i'd say!
The ratio's might get annoying though.

Wow lots of reply's awesome !!!
There is a good change i'll have to replace the diff so i'm assuming a supra diff with be ok ????
TRD: it's going into the blue celica i'm gunna keep the gold one bog stock that way i have something to compare my blue celica to.
Also the colt still hasn't has it's transplant
I plan to get a heavy duty clutch anywhay but i'm wondering what to buy for a SA63 or something else ??
Hydra: what do u mean the ratios will get annoying are they too close or too far apart ?
I plan on driving the car hard and it will have a few minor mods nothing extreme will the W55 still hold up ?
I'm going with a narrower tyre on the back so there shouldn't too much stress on the drivetrain
Thanks fellas Mookie

matt 84 - slave cylinder we covered already, a xA60 series one from Repco for $33 odd dollars. I'm pretty sure the release fork is common to this vintage (W series), as is the throw-out bearing to suit whatever clutch you are running.
HyDrA - W55 ratio's are a bit strange I have found, maybe they better suit an NA car with its different power delivery compared to a turbo motor. I'm not sure, but a 55 is the last box I want to run behind a G series motor. I have a 57 as its 5th gear is not as overdriven as the one in the 58 box. 0.85 opposed to 0.75. You don't drop into such a great hole once you pull 5th, but a W58 would be better for a high horsepower high revving turbo motor.
Mookie - A Supra diff will cope fine *provided* you are not God's gift to drifting, burnout's, dough-nuts, circle work etc - like any diff in any car. F series (Supra/RA65 7.5 inch) are good strong units. The final drive ratio you want in an LSD might be harder to find, but they are out there. See a clutch specialist for the heavy duty unit you need. They will find / make the right unit to match your hardware and your driving style. Its worth the $400 to $500 you will spend on this - trust me you will hate dropping (and refitting) the gearbox and tail shaft once you start breaking a few std clutch's. Again - the W55 will hold up under pretty serious driving - don't be too silly about it for too long.....

W55 is too close ratio for my liking, well, for my engine.
W58 is somewhere on my list of items to purchase... or a 6 speed from an IS200, that'd be cool.
