Oil Coolers Mon, 01 November 2004 22:56 Go to next message
A couple of general questions regarding oil coolers,
how do they hook up to the engine? (are the lines just tapped into the sump?)
How is the oil circulated, does it use the standard oil pump or do they require an extra pump?
When do you need one?
and finally how big, i.e number of rows?

the reason i ask is that my brother and i are supercharging a KE55 (4k-c) and wondering if an oil cooler is a good idea.
Thanks guys

Oil cooler always a great idea!! I am currently tapping one into my 4AGZE. I have machined up a block which sits where the oil filter attatches to the block, then i am running lines out to a remote oil filter mount, then running it through the cooler and back into the first block which is attatched to the sump. by doing it this way i am utilising the oil pump pressure into the filter, and also getting filtered oil through the core, so it avoids blockage.
Unfortunately i don't know how well if at all this will work, but it should. I need it cause i have a turbo 4agze in the build.

its not hard to buy remote mount oil filter kits, or make up one out of pieces, and you can plumb in an oil cooler as well.
this utilises the oil pump for pressure, and means that no extra holes in sump etc are needed.
this is the way that i've always seen it done.
as for size, nfi sorry.

I just fitted one to mine too. Always use a full flow cooler, where all the oil goes through the cooler, rather than a bypass one like a standard 4AG. You'd also be mad not to install a remote oil filter at the same time on a 4AG. The bit that really kills you is the cost of the hoses/fittings!

since the K's are bad for oil heat, it is a very good idea.

as MrShin says, a full flow cooler is the way to go, otherwise you are only cooling oil when there is excess pressure/flow from the pump.

you will likely have a little pressure drop due to the cooler core, but may not be that much..

i would strongly recommend that you look at a higher volume oil pump (ie T series Wink ) that will provide the extra volume at same pressure.. shimming the pressure relief valve is not going to help when you run out of flow, but will help if you have the capacity for extra volume.

also look at the oil thermostats (mocal and permacool do them) that bypass the cooler core until a set temp is reached.. this works just like water thermostat, and i like em.. haven't used one yet, but i still like the idea Wink

SC 4K eh? any details?
