ST165 g/box (hypothetical)

Just wondering, the early early ST165s (1986 manufacture) had a manually locking centre diff, ie the car was in front wheel drive most of the time, or you could lock the centre and have 4 wheel drive.
Does this mean if you took one of these gearboxes, took the front driveshafts out of the car and then stuck it in 4WD mode, that you would have a rear wheel drive ST165?

*hmmms* What's the deal there? Surely if it's a locked centre then as soon as there is no power to the fronts it simply goes to the rear...or is the mechanism incapable?
p.s. I have no money!

minispool? I'm a bit of a retard in this area...do you mean weld the viscous coupling together on a later GT4 box??

ahh umm... not having seen one i'm totally guessing, but if you replace it with a solid chunk of metal, as they do with rear differentials (ie mini/full spool/CIG locker), then it must transfer all power thru the diff.. it can't slip.
got a pic of the 'coupling'?

It's not really the rear diff that is the issue, it's the centre one.
I haven't taken a GT4 box apart yet - so that's why I'm a little flaky in this area.

if its anything setup like the st185 gearboxes that locker is only to be exploited in towing - it wouldnt be strong enough to handle total RWD power
the other option is north southing with a W series box and ma70 rear end
PS 3sge man - PFFT to JDM - go teh ozspec!

Yeah I'm assuming that there would be strength issues, I know that wiso has locked a GT4 gearbox into FWD and hasn't had too many strength issues (after a few goes I think) so surely going the other way (RWD) wouldn't be worse.
The only reason I ask about this though is that the original ST165 wasn't all-wheel drive so the gearbox is probably quite different and it may be stronger with that kind of setup. Only problem is availability and the fact that it probably won't work.
