MR2 SW20 BOV Wed, 03 November 2004 08:33 Go to next message
what i am wondering is, is it possible to put an Atmo BOV on a 90 - 93 model MR2. The reason i ask is that i know that there is a problem because of fuel mapping which was only introduced come the 94 model.
i'm pretty sure you can only have the "butterfly" BOV (u know the di di di di di noise one Rolling Eyes Laughing ) or a plumb back BOV... i love the Atmo BOV, can it be done without fuel mapping?

Yes it is possible, it's not like it will kill the engine or anything, it's just that the air/fuel ratio will be a little richer during gear changes as the air is being vented.
You can also get BOVs that both vent and plumb back, i know Turbosmart and GFB make some.

Yes you can. No you shouldn't.

The standard blow off valve does the job that blow off valves were designed to do fine, it dumps the compressed air from the turbo back to the intake side on closed throttle.

the only reason to replace the standard valve is so you can spend a couple hundred dollars to get a noise that makes most people think you're a tool.

The other reason for not getting an atmospheric vented valve on the AFM engine is that they tend to also open when the engine is under vacuum meaning you will be adding unfiltered and unmetered air to the engine. This is far from a good thing and one of the most common causes I see on the MR2 forums for people complaining about rough running stalling etc.

Now I admit I am running a gay GFB atmo venting blow off valve on my 3S but there are a couple of mitigating circumstances here, the valve came with the intercooler I used and my engine is MAP sensed.

thanks for the help..
i love the noise a BOV makes,
u know the saught butterfly noise one, the stuttered one, isn't that a simple modification you can apply to any BOV? and is it bad for your car?
also, what do you think of plumb back BOV?
