fuel pumps turning themselfs on Wed, 03 November 2004 13:37 Go to next message
My fuel pumps are turned on when ingintion is turned on , through a realay, sometimes i will leave my car and one minute later the pump will turn on?

Is it just a buggerd relay, is a 30amp relay big enought for two fuel pumps (vl fuel pump and small pusher pump)

that depends on the quality of the relay.. a lot of the "30A horn relays" are not rated for 30A continuous..

it would be safer to plug in another relay anyway, and get a decent one (ie Bosch, potter&brumfield etc)

I have the reverse problem, getting the bloody fuel pump to switch on, traced to (wait for it !) a bad earth. Your relay is buggered as Stewart said, get a heavy duty unit or pinch one from Nick a Part out of an old EFI Cressida.

fwiw, i'm currently rewiring my entire car, and for most things, i will be earthing direct to the battery, thru a series of large earth cables... like the 25 and 60 amp cables (12/8gauge?) from Jaycar.
nothing i hate more than bad earths Wink
for relays, the VL commondores seem to have good quality ones. other than that i prefer to use 'proper' potter&brunfield ones, where the 40A rating is continuous, not 'horn' intermittent.. they cost between $5 and $10 each usually.

Damn funny you should say exactly this as I have an external fuel pump for my 1G-GZE in my RA23. It was earthed inside the cabin and then that failed. So I ran a twin thick earth cable from an old Corolla battery earth from the fuel pump to one of its chassis mounting bolts and also across to a bolt that runs into the chassis rail. Worked fine for 3 mins and then gradually the fuel pump slowed down to a complete stop. Now I have a dicky little 2mm wire running from the pump underneath the chassis all the way back to the battery - and of course - it works fine.......<sigh>....

dont use relays from any holden

they are wired differently to your normal bosch relay

unless you know what you are doin

bosch relays and holders will set you back about 15 bucks for the set

goto your local auto elctrician and get them

most auto parts shops sell the cheaper relays

hella make ok relays too

thats weird...

the ones i got were from a VL commonwhore. they have detachable bases that clip onto the sides of the 'relay box'. the relays themselves were Bosch branded, and were the normal 85/86, 30/87 type. there was also a metal one which had the 87a terminal also...

i redid the wiring using clip secured spade terminals from Dick Smith (at $4.85 for 10 Sad ), and it all seems to work normally...

Sideshow, which are the weird Holden relays??

holdens have 2 pins in wrong spot

u can use them but mainly holdens use this pin layout

most other relays have 85 and 86 across

then 30 and 87 up and down

holdens dont

they look exactly the same but the pin outs are different

last number on relay i think on holdens is 457

normal bosch relay is 150

those clips i buy 100 for under 10 bucks hehe

the holdens one have 85 86 diagonally
and 30 87 diagonally too

yes

but thats y i never use holden relays on other cars but holdens

if u put a holden relay in a socket setup for normal relays u blow things up

its mainly the people who dont know the difference

a relay stuffs up in their holden and they goto local shop and buy a normal one and they wonder why theres a funny smell in the car
