4AGE harmonic balancer bolt torque spec, anyone? Sun, 06 October 2002 09:41 Go to next message
The toyota 4AGE book says 101ft lb, which is frickin tight (yes toit .. toit loik a toiga Razz ) but that broke the last bolt and I don't want to wait a week for another one, again. Sad

Is 101ftlb a misprint, or...? It doesn't look like it needs to be too tight, as everything attatched to it fits in a groove on the crank, so it's not holding anything on by clamping force, just keeping it on the end of the crank. Any ideas what it should be torqued to?

cheers!

actually, the keyway on the crank is only there to locate the harmonic balancer, not to handle any stress. If you do not have sufficient torque on the balancer bolt, the balancer itself can rotate slightly and slam against the keyway, eventually breaking it.

Its a big bolt, and should handle 100lb/ft no worries. If you broke it, then either your torque wrench is wrong, or the bolt was fatigued, or had insufficient lubrication on the threads.

Good luck Very Happy
