In a last ditch effort to get my car ready for a trackday tomorrow, I was changing diff oil and and checking everything drivetrain-wise was tight, I had the front of the car jacked up on the front cross member, than bang! it fell off the jack..
The jack gouged a 50p sized chunk of (thin) aluminium from the area just behind the fanbelt type pulleys on the front of the engine...
How bad is this!?!?! I am panicking right this minute, and hope it isn't an engine out job. would it be possible to make a temporary repair on this. This piece of aluminium fell out, and is a perfect match for the hole, so I'm hoping that no bits found there way inside the engine..
Pleas help, what can I do to fix it!?!?

I love titanium Devcon - when you are in a bind like the one that you describe it is like a beacon from over the horizon.
I've used to repair a hole in the bottom end of my brother-in-law's 70hp outboard motor - over 5 yrs ago and still going strong. Incidentally the hole was made when a damaged rogue bearing made a successful bid for freedom (it had some help from the crank counter-weight).

Off-topic, but I couldn't resist mentioning that a similar thing happened to me last weekend. In my case, it was the rear end that came crashing down - launching itself off the jack stands (one of which is now seriously bent). Luckily, I had just removed the windey-jack from the training arm and had the wheels under the car to take the impact. I'm still kinda nervous and paranoin at every squeak and knock - but I don't think anything was damaged. It made an almighty crash and scared the bejesus out of me. And made the cat (who has been under the front of the car rolling in oil a minute before) bolt up the nearest tree. Next time, I'll do a better job of chocking the front wheels.

Okay if we are gonna start jack stories then...
When i was changing my clutch i made a bracket WST, SST or whatever that sat around my crossmember and sat on the top of my jack. The cross member sits directly beneath the transfer case and the gearbox obviously is attached to the foward side of the transfer case. Now because the gearbox is quite long and the crossmember is under the transfer case i would have thought that supporting the crossmember would cause the gearbox to fall down or foward. WRONG! it falls back i.e. gearbox heads skywards (shows just how heavy the transfer case is). Anyways after undoing all my bellhousing bolts etc i was lying under the gearbox on my back (head to front), jack supporting TC and GB, shimming the TC and GB backwards so the clutch would fall off the GB spline.
SO as i was shimming it back i was holding the bellhousing expecting it to come down toward my chest WRONG! It went up TC went down rolled off jack and bracket, at the same time the Bellhousing then came downward clipped my 2 front teeth (actually chipped them) gave me a fat lower lip on the way through and ended up on my chest squashing me which also gave me a big bruise and graze on chest. Im so lucky thats all the happened to me though. If i was sitting a little more under the box it would have surely either knocked my teeth out or broken my jaw.
