Which should i invest in?.... ST162 or ST165 Thu, 04 November 2004 10:45 Go to next message
I've now got a choice, should i buy an australian delivered Celica ST162, for a cheaper price (under 5K) just a bit cheaper on insurance ($1160 full comprehensive per year)

OR

Should i wait and buy a Japanese delivered Celica ST165 for a higher price (6-7K) and just a bit dearer on insurance ($1460 Full comprehensive per year)

Which do you guys think is the better choice to invest in?

To get a complianced ST165 for less than 8K is a pretty good find - although condition and km's are a factor. Mine had done 120000 and was in great nick and I picked it up fully complied for $8,500. Note there are several bits on the GT4 which are totally unique to the car and hence you may find yourself waiting for bits to come from japan when certain things break! But that's just a typical import I guess Smile

Honestly, the ST162 is a very nice car especially for the price. But I would (and have) put my money down on the GT4, and having driven both - I can say that if you can find a good nick GT4 you will be in for one very smooth, reasonably quick ride. I'm yet to take both the cars out on the track so I really can't tell you much more.

Thanks FWDboy,

Apart from the Turbo and 4WD.... what other difference is there between the 2?

the 165 has LSD right? i'm thinking also, if i can get a ST162, drive it for a while, then plunk in a turbo for it.... will this be just as good as the 165 u think?

dude i'd go for the 165
get a nicer interior, leather trim and the same buckets as the white lightening which are really comfy, i had some in a 162 and they were tops, huggy yet comfortable. i think you also get climate control?

Definately go the ST165, you've got a a pretty good deal. Especially a very god engine!!!
Seriously though getting a ST162 and doing the the GT4 conversion is really not worth it compared to buying a ST165 straight out, trust me I was gonna do it, but I took a long hard think about it.
There are heaps of st162s on the road, but sh#it all st165s.
GO THE ST165!!!

For those prices, definitely go the 165. But that seems very low for the GT4, and very high for the 162.

I picked up my 162 for $2950 three months ago.

If you want to know what the difference between the two cars are do a bit of a search around and you'll find a fair bit of inside info. Go to www.alltrac.net as well as they are GT4 fanatics and combined there's probably more knowledge on there than the group of engineers who made the '165s.

The 87 and onwards (although some 86 models) all have a viscous centre diff, however both front and rear diffs are open (remember there's three of them)! To quickly summarise, I've found the viscous centre to be something of a handful on gravel, as it loads up kind of strangely, something I'm still getting used to! With the right provocation it works great, but don't expect to just plant your foot and get big slides going, cause the only thing you'll do is understeer. Left foot braking is also a bit on and off, as the ABS system is a PITA!

The 86 model has a simple locking device to engage four wheel drive, but it's not for use on surfaces like dry tarmac so you'll be stuck with FWD except when it's raining heavily or if you take if off the road and onto the dirt Smile Or onto a dirt road!

As for the price of an ST162, be careful! Some cheap ones are good, some aren't so good. Same with the expensive ones. Even though they still look fairly up to date and don't LOOK old, some of them are really worn out and tired so see if you can get info on the history of the car!
