AE86 Handbrake Adjustment (SOLVED) Sat, 06 November 2004 07:09 Go to next message
Problem solved!

Quote:

totally loosen off the HB adjustment nuts.
pump foot brake at least 10 times (fully in).
re-adjust handbrake so it has 6 clicks.

hi kids, i have a JDM ae86 with disk rear end...
in the past the handbrake has worked just fine, feels good and locks with minimal effort or pressure...
now recently i noticed that the handbrake lost the ability to hold the rear disks tightly, even when parked, you can still push the car forward with handbrake on. I have checked handle adjustment pads and fluid, all is fine. also greased all cable parts.

can anyone please offer me helpful advise.

thank you

Hi Genkin,

Not sure if Simon is taking the piss but check 2 things in particular. The handbrake lever assembly on the caliper has a small pin that swivels to allow more clearance when working on the caliper. Swing it round so the tab is pushing the lever out (hard to describe but when you find you should be able to work it out).

The second thing is bleed the rear brakes. The integrated hand brake is a shit to keep working consistently and you will have to continually bleed the buggers. Get used to it Confused

Good luck,
Denis

Sprinter: I had a look under the calipers. couldnt see the 'pin' u were refering to. only pin i saw was the cotter pin holding HB cable in place.

although i did notice that when the handbrake is fully engaged, it doesnt seem to be able to go any further, even on the caliper assembly! and it still doesnt get full lock!!!

i might get a brake expert to have a look. im stumped!

AE95: hydraulic handbrake is not feisable for me. cost to much, and a waste on a daily driver i reckon.

problem solved!

handbrake works super locky now! LOCK LOCK!

heres how i did it (i assume this is the 'proper' way.

totally loosen off the HB adjustment nuts.
pump foot brake at least 10 times (fully in).
re-adjust handbrake so it has 6 clicks.

and voila! go for a locky lock session around your neighbourhood!

thanks to all those who gave me suggestions and kept me tinkering.
