is there any advantage/point to getting cams regrinded to increase performance? i have a spare set in my garage and i am wondering if i could get any cheap performance out of them. also where abouts in perth would i be looking at getting this done, and how much would i expect to pay for it?

There are no rockers in a 3SG head, so you can't fiddle with the base circle, so you can't radically change either the lift or duration aspects by grinding; if you peel out that last bit of base circle within the lash compensation allowance, will only net a minimal change and cost yourself $$$ for a bunch of thick shims...
I've talked to a local cam regrinder in my area, and he wasn't at all interested in hard-face welding that much material onto the lobes to do a custom grind...
That leaves 2 options...
You can buy a pair of aftermarket Japanese cams from Blitz, HKS, Toda, and perhaps others
Or you can call Richard at TED Components and get a set of custom billet cams (http://www.tedcomponents.com/3sgte.htm)
TED are the only people I'm aware of that do billet cams to any specifications geometrically possible within the limits of the mechanical assembly, or modify the head to accept higher lift cams if you want to go for broke!!! (the lifter bores on a gen2 non-RC head won't take the higher lift cams without clearancing the lifter bores for big peaks)

With respect to the shim spitting problems...
if it's a Gen2 motor (which the ST185 came with), you can literally drop in the shimless bucket type lifters out of a later Toyota 1ZZ-FE motor, thereby forever eliminating the possibility of spitting a shim! (drop in still requires you to maintain proper cam clearance with the correct sized lifters, of which I believe they make 42 different incremental heights...)
