RA40 struts into KE3x/5x..... now with pics Sun, 07 November 2004 09:56 Go to next message
I just spent an afternoon test fitting some RA40 struts into my KE30 and it worked out pretty good Smile.
I still have some modification to do, namely swapping the lower spring mount from the corolla strut to the RA40 strut, but it was an easy fit.

I used the struts, lower control arms and steering arms from the RA40. This was because the bolt holes where the steering arm bolts to the strut has about a 2mm difference between the corolla and celica ones.

The lower control arms are the same length and so are the strut bodies though the steering arms are slightly longer on the RA40 but that doesn't bother me.

The corolla strut tops fitted straight onto the celica shock and I used the corolla springs. I also plan on fitting the corolla shocks into the celica strut.

I think I will fit adjustable strut tops which will hopefully give a bit of negative camber, but with standard strut tops there doesn't seem to be too much positive camber.

This seems to be a good cheap upgrade (so far it has cost me $40) for street use Smile.

I look forward to hearing any feed back you have (positive or negative). I also have some pics and I will try to get them up (gotta work out how first)

Brad

Nice pics, I've got to take some of my setup as well.. Bit more butchered than that though.

As for wheels, I've got a nice set of Silvia rims fitted to my KE50 with XT130 struts, looks very nice and doesn't stick out of the wheel arch. Smile

gr8r-x: Thanks for the tip on the wheels. I was thinking just a standard set of celica rims as I don't want to spend too much and I want to keep the look low key (sleeper Cool) , but I think I will check out some silvia rims.

The reason I used the RA40 brakes is because I got the complete struts, rear drums and master cylinder for free. I didn't know about the difference in the bolt hole spacing at the bottom of the struts when I got them so I had to buy the lower control arms but for $40 I can't complain Very Happy. I plan on fitting the RA40 master cylinder to the KE30 booster and using the RA40 drums on the rear (although I think they are the same as the corolla ones anyway).

Hopefully the brakes will be a cheap upgrade that will satisfy an engineer, give improved street performance over standard and be a platform for possible future improvements.

BTW the reason for the brake upgrade is because I plan on fitting a 4AGE Very Happy.

Don't we all.. Laughing

The Silvia rims aren't that expensive. I got mine for under $400 with great tyres (about 95% tread), fitted and balanced. Mind you, had to spend about a week just looking around for them, bastards...
